Yes CHL players are paid a whopping $150 (max) per week during the school year. They use this financial windfall to live their exhorbitant life styles. Many buy Ferraris and Audis and live in mansions on the outskirts of town in gated communities.
If you don't realize that this is sarcasm then you need to pay more attention to life. Actually the dollar value of a CHL career is substantially less than an NCAA scholarship but the NCAA views CHL players as professionals.
In fact I know players (non NHL) who have attended NCAA colleges on scholarships and others who have played in the CHL and taken advantage of the CHL education provisions. Both sides have said they would do it the same way again. But the CHL route lead to more hockey and a premium education of the players choice.
The NCAA player must maintain grade average to keep his scholarship. This often means taking courses which protect the scholarship not always the first choice of the player. There are few engineers and doctors playing NCAA hockey. Upon completion of the NCAA career many players pursue a minor league hockey career while they complete their degree requirements.
The CHL player takes University courses while playing that he wishes often as preliminary courses to tougher degrees. Upon completion of his CHL career he has a full ride scholarship (no strings) at a Canadian University of his choice in a field that he qualifies for. If there is available time he can also play hockey for the CIS University (often part time) while he continues his education. I know engineers and doctors who have earned their degrees this way.

They all get a stipend, maybe $100 a week on top of their billet being paid for. Some are said to receive one-off payments to ensure they report. They all are eligible for an education package paid for by the team. Some have sponsorship deals, etc.
