Either you don't have enough RAM or you are trying to give Java more RAM for minecraft than it can actually use. Personally I have never seem minecraft run out of memory, even on a 2 GB tablet PC, but I normally run it in 64-bit Linux which is slimmer memorywise than Windows.

A 32-bit operating system is limited to around 3 GB total including the operating system and running programs. Or if you have a 64-bit operating system, but have not installed 64-bit Java you might be trying to give 32-bit Java RAM beyond what it can address. If you give it more RAM than 32-bits can address, it will reach a point where it cannot access that RAM and gags with that error.

I don't think virtual memory on a USB stick would help, because that would be slower than virtual memory on your hard drive.

no you cant, you need RAM (Random Access Memory) to allocate memory, RAM is where your computer stores information short-term, like minecraft server data, a usb stick is used for long term data storage, kina like a hard drive. and by the way, just buy minecraft, its only 27 bucks, and you support mojang's development...

    Source(s): I play minecraft too.
