There's nothing else like health care, so nothing.
"what this bill now make me do is pay higher rates and taxes to cover other peoples health care"
Wow. You really think that's true? You already pay to cover other people. Far more than you will in the future.
ERs will not refuse care if someone needs it. This is currently paid for by everyone else. If everyone has insurance, people are more likely to receive preventive care, which is cheaper.
So the people save money doing it this way. Which is why Republicans used to support a mandate. That is of course until Obama tried to get it passed as a comprimise.

Energy Star appliances. College tuition. Food and other items needed to take care of children. These are just a few of the things which the government has long provided tax credits for.
Now, aside from the increased complexity of writing the legislation, what exactly is the practical difference between increasing taxes and coupling the increase with a tax cut for people who buy certain products, and simply laying a new tax on the people who don't buy those products?

Make that green cars and you're alot closer to the next big move. Think about all the ways our government can tax us for not buying the more expensive eco-friendly light bulb, fridge, car, you name it and we'll have to "green" it. Of course, this will make alot of industries rich in the process and that is really the point of it all. Just ask Gore. He made a billion preaching to us while living high on the hog and not practicing what he preached. That must have been his payment for ceding the Presidency w/out a fight, since he clearly won the popular vote.
