Two simple Biology questions?
I was reading about Amino Acids and one of its chemical compounds is (COOH), and I was wondering why there are are two 'O's, as opposed to O2. My second question is, what is that number in front of an element called that shows how many elements are in the compound? I hope I phrased this clearly. Have a nice day :-)
Because Biology isn't my most knowledgeable field, and I was just wondering about this.
Sorry, I've got Biology on the brain :P But yeah, I'm not very good at whatever this is and I'm just wanting to get better at it.

O2 is in the molecular state however here in COOH, there are 2 oxygen atoms bonded to the Carbon and they are not bonded to each other to form a molecule.
And, the number that is written in front indicates the atomicity i.e it tells how many atoms of an element are required to form a stable molecule.
Hope I've answered that right!

First off , sure that the compound is not CHOOH ? (COOH would be some wierd kind of ion)
It's not written as O2 because one of the oxygen is bound to the carbon by a double bond, the other oxygen is bound to both the carbon and the hydrogen by single bonds. It's a convention that indicates how the molecule is put together.
if you write it as 2 CHOOH it just means you have two molecules of it, it only serves a purpose if you're balancing a chemical equation.
Best to get a chemistry text and look up the rules from there on in , it gets a little complicated to explain in without structural diagrams.

its written COOH because its an element and a radical or more correctly a polyatomic ion
The number in front of an element is its coefficient

I think that it is more chemistry than biology.
I don't understand the first question very well, but my guess is that it is written this way because that's they way the molecule is structured.
The second question is the atomic number, which gives the amount of protons in an atom.

it wants to emphasize on OH that makes the molecule alkali
(you can find it in chemistry)
and the numbers dont have a specific name
