Why are 26 year old adults allowed on their parents' health insurance plans under the new health care law?
I heard the president speak after the Supreme Court ruled on the health care law and one point he brought out was that parents could have their 26 year old child included on their health care plans. When I was 18 my father's insurance did not cover me any longer and by the time I was 26, I was paying for my own insurance. That seems awful old to still be under a parents' health insurance. A lot of 26 year old men and women are married and have children. Are they still to included on their parents' health plan because Obama did not make any stipulation to that aspect of the new law?
I did not have a choice, my dad's insurance dropped me at 18 and I went to college, and paid my own way thus I paid for my insurance through the group rate at the college then and started work right after college an bought insurance. It just seems that this is too old for coverage on parents' insurance. I guess someone like me who paid his own way resents having to pay taxes for people who choose to stay in school.
Just because I asked this question does not mean I am a shallow thinker. It was an honest question and all insults get voted thumbs down because you do not understand nor know me

A lot of them are still in college and need the health insurance that their parents can provide.
I am 25, and I have been paying for my own coverage since I was 18. A lot of people are not like you and me. The opportunity to work and go to college is not there for a lot of people. Especially, in this economy.

You misunderstand the provision. It is not "everyone up to 26 is covered under their parental plan". Students and unemployed can be covered on their parental plan up to the age of 26.
See my source for the details.

Times are different now and people need more help to weather the economic storm.
I believe the ruling on 26 year olds is only if they are dependent on their parents.

People go to college. If you go for a doctorate it takes 8 years total so 18 plus 8 is 26

One of the sad parts of calling this 'Obamacare' is it keeps people from the basic information contained in it's real name:
PPACA.
Patient
Protection
Affordable
Care
Act
This provision falls under the first two letters of that.
