What do you think of Farnum Feed Thru Daily Dewormer?

I am considering this.

It is a daily pellet wormer, by Farnum. If you use it, and have vet signature, it comes with a $5000 colic insurance policy.

Does anyone use the daily dewormer and what are your thoughts ?

Update:

Gallop: Is there a reason you stopped using this?

I wouldn't use it personally. It was great when daily dewormers first came out but now the worms are building up a resitence to the chemicals, which means eventually our dewormers won't work. Plus, you are putting unecessary chemicals into your horses body everyday, and you don't even know if they have worms! Save you hard earned money and get a fecal test done, they are like $15 bucks, and your vet can do it the next time he is there. If you horse has worms, no big deal just put him on the proper deworming program and check your horse again a few months later. Some people like the feed thru dewormers, others don't, but I can tell you not as many people are using them anymore because of the resistency, cost, and health of the horse.

I gave daily Continuex for years as a colic preventive. My vet monitored blood chemistries yearly on the horses to check for liver or kidney toxicities while they were on Continuex for years, and never had a problem. Before you start it, you should paste with Equimax or Zimectrin Gold to do an initial kill off, and then again after 6 months or as directed in the instructions. Daily dewormers are low-dose agents, and will foster development of resistant parasites if you don't first paste with a potent deworming agent.

I would first do an FEC to establish a baseline egg count, administer the paste dewormer, and then in 14 days, do another count called a fecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) to check for parasite resistance. If there is no evidence of resistant parasites, then I'd start the daily dewormer. There is a predicatble reduction in worm counts that should occur with each deworming agent if there are no resistant parasites. The second FEC shows the percentage of worms killed off after the dewormer was administered. You can then also use the intital count as a baseline for periodic random FECRTs to check for efficacy of the daily dewormer.

There is concern that low dose daily dewormers contribute to resistance, but that is more likely to occur if you don't do the paste deworming initially and at least once or twice a year.

Add.......................... After years of boarding my horses, I bought my own property. I only had two horses at the time when I moved to my own place and both were retired from showing so they never left the property. Between that and managing my own pastures and manure, I didn't need to continue with that level of parasite management anymore. I never had a problem with it while I continued it though, and the one horse who'd had a history of colics never colicked again after I switched him to daily deworming along with providing unlimited grass hay along with Purina Equine Senior feed.

In answer to your question to

    Gallop:

When your fecal tests show no parasite load and your pastures are maintained, there is minimal chance that they will reinfect themselves with worms. So you quit with the worm meds because they cause worms to become resistant to the chemicals and as of right now, there are no new chemicals to knock down the true worm infestations.
