Has anybody else watched 2001 a Space Odyssey?
When I was 6, or 7, I went to the movies, and for .50 cents I saw this movie. But, that same day I got sick and didn't get to see the end of the same movie. I would say this movie is about mankind becoming a society only to realize they have a beginning from a higher society; God perhaps. I know why this movie gave me a headache when I was 6, or 7.
I almost said to myself, I don't care how it ends. But, it was only five minutes away from ending. Wow, pre-Star Wars space flicks.
P.S. I don't want to offend anybody, But, the movie Dune was a worse movie that 2001.

I think it was one of the worst movies myself. Not that the effects were bad just it was a slow moving movie and offer little to me otherwise. I had to think how it ended with your post and I saw it a couple times since others wanted to see it. It didn't leave me with any profound thoughts at all. Nor am I desiring any sequels.
I like some Star Trek, planet of the apes and others. To boldly go where no one has gone before. And seem they had more moral lessons which I do remember
Just my opinion and I know some like it. And have said so. And I understand what they say appeals to them. But that movie can go into oblivion for all I care. No offense meant to others. We all see Art and movies different doesn't mean we have to be disagreeable if we disagree.

This was my first exposure to Arthur C. Clarke, author and scientist largely responsible for the first communication satellites. "Childhoods End" may have been one of his early books turned into a low budget movie but I can't verify that or find it. I always thought the right producer could make it into an astounding movie right now. "2001" was made in 1968 so the ending attempted to combine LSD type inner space with outer space. It surpassed the original Star Trek in special effects and introduced it's own universe and the genre of Space Opera Science Fiction. It's unforgettable.

I just could never get into it, even though it has been on TV a couple times. Funny too how many of those sorts of movies are mild by today's standards. Now if it is absolute violence and destruction, it is rated a bad movie. Even with the ratings...everybody wants at least a PG-13 rating but preferable R....did you see the movie Armageddon? It wasn't too bad. I was surprised that they called it that, since years ago people seldom heard the word. I think they all need to have a Bible study, hehehe.

I saw it as a small child, then as an elementary school kid, then as an teen, then as an adult. Of course, even grown-ups are baffled by at least some parts of it, but that didn't ruin it for me. The mysteriousness of the ending, for example, provoked many long, stimulating, speculative discussions between me and my friends and relatives. It seems to be a polarizing movie; so many love it, and so many hate it. I'm in the love camp.
One important scientific factoid I learned from watching it is that when you are out in space, and you are watching a spaceship dock with a space station, you cannot hear the ship's engine, but you can hear some nice 19th-century waltz music. :)

Isn't this nice no one is Thumbing down for not agreeing? I'll give you a star and all a thumps up.
I think we all can agree either we like this movie or we don't. Not a favorite of mine myself, but I do see the great effects it had (and for it's time)
It was on again not to long ago. Perhaps I will take another look at it down the road. As someone mentioned like art we all see something different. And can like it or not.

I saw it when first released at age 11 or 12. It had a profound affect on me.
It changed the way I thought about movies, and the world in general.
It's a landmark, cinematic achievement, and one of the greatest films ever made.
It's a meditation piece, not entertainment.

This movie is an experience at any age. I read the book and it didn't help at all. I did love the music and special effects, but mostly I fell in love with Keir Dullea.
