Have to try several times to start car- what could be the problem?

I have a 96 Sunfire and for the past week or so, I've had to try to start it up at least 4 times before it will start. Once it starts, it runs just fine. Advanced Autoparts ran a check on it and it said that one of the oxygen sensors was bad.

Before it started doing this, for the past few months, occasionally when I'd start it, it would run kind of rough and sound sputtery at first. It would hesitate and struggle to move forward for a couple of seconds like it was about to stall, which occasionally, it would-but would start right back up when I tried. I'd have to drive it around a bit to work out the kinks, and then it would be fine. Now, it doesn't seem to be doing any of that- it just takes way too many tries to get it started.

Any idea what the problem could be? Could the bad oxygen sensor be the cause of these problems? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A bad oxygen sensor would not cause starting problems. The computer ignores the oxygen sensor during starting and relies on coolant temp sensor and MAP or MAF sensor. Does it start better if you push your foot down about 1/2 way on the gas pedal? If so, that's a sign of a bad coolant temp sensor.

Another trick is to cycle the key on and off between off and RUN (not start) about 4 times. Then try starting. If it starts right away, that's a sign of a bad fuel pump.
