We use LOTS of a bleach at work- am I in any danger?
I work at a pet store caring for the animals and cleaning their cages. They use bleach, and lots of it for everything- and they don't measure it out in the water, they just literally dump 1/3 or 1/2 a gallon into the bucket or sink. My hands are in it about 80% of the time, and there is always a strong smell of it in the work area, so I know I'm inhaling it. There are also no windows or any form of ventilation. My hands are extremely dry and a little itchy now, and when I'm cleaning cages, the bleach smell is so powerful it stings my eyes and makes me feel like I can't catch my breath.
I'm looking for another job and I want to leave this one asap, but I really need to be making money, so does anyone know how long it would take to have any serious health consequences from the bleach? Am I in any significant danger right now? Any input is appreciated.
3 AnswersOther - General Health Care9 years agoBack injury because of work, no health insurance. What are my options?
I work at a kennel- very long days, and a lot of hard physical labor. Mind you, it's much harder than it needs to be because the owner refuses to hire enough people to sufficiently do the job- so we are running around like crazy all day and rarely have time to take legally required breaks.
Anyway, since working there, I've injured my back, probably due to heavy lifting or the some of the dogs pulling on the leashes. I'm in a pretty serious amount of pain and have trouble sleeping and moving certain ways. My employer did pay someone she knows to give me a massage, and the masseuse told me that she believes I've popped a rib head out of place and that I need to be going to a chiropractor.
I have tried everything I can at home to deal with the pain, but it's not really subsiding. I don't have health insurance and I don't have the money to go to a doctor or a chiropractor. I don't know if my employer has liability insurance, and I've never dealt with anything like this, so I don't know how to approach it. My employer is extremely cheap and I worry that she's going to cause problems for me if there is some way for me to pursue worker's compensation. Does anyone know what my options might be for getting medical care for this? Thank you in advance.
4 AnswersLaw & Legal9 years agoHave to try several times to start car- what could be the problem?
I have a 96 Sunfire and for the past week or so, I've had to try to start it up at least 4 times before it will start. Once it starts, it runs just fine. Advanced Autoparts ran a check on it and it said that one of the oxygen sensors was bad.
Before it started doing this, for the past few months, occasionally when I'd start it, it would run kind of rough and sound sputtery at first. It would hesitate and struggle to move forward for a couple of seconds like it was about to stall, which occasionally, it would-but would start right back up when I tried. I'd have to drive it around a bit to work out the kinks, and then it would be fine. Now, it doesn't seem to be doing any of that- it just takes way too many tries to get it started.
Any idea what the problem could be? Could the bad oxygen sensor be the cause of these problems? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I drink about a gallon of usweetened, decaf green iced tea every day. I brew it myself. Could there be any adverse health effects from this, or am I okay with this amount? Thanks in advance.
8 AnswersDiet & Fitness9 years agoHas anyone done the Vet Tech program through Penn Foster?
After much floating around aimlessly in college, I've realized I want to be a veterinary technician. I found Penn Foster online, which is a distance education program for vet techs, and is accredited by the AVMA. This would be really convenient for me because I could work full time while taking "classes", wouldn't have to base my living arrangements on a school, and it's insanely cheap.
Having said that, I found a lot of scary reviews about it online- most of which appear to be people who for whatever reason quit the program and couldn't get their money back... though some said they didn't feel they were learning much, and one that said they were refused jobs because their degree was from Penn Foster. It seems a little sketchy, but I'm not sure what to believe, since it's accredited...
Has anyone done this program or attempted it? If you finished, were you able to pass the VTNE and get a job? If you quit, why? Any insight would be great. Thanks in advance.
3 AnswersOther - Education9 years agoAm I eligible to collect unemployment from a work-study job?
I'm a college student, but am 25 and am living on my own and have been for a while. I was employed through federal work study at my school for about a year and a half, when my supervisor decided that they had to make cuts because we weren't getting enough work in, so my position was removed.
This was very unexpected and has really put me in a bad situation. I've been trying for a couple months now to find another job, but haven't been able to get anything. My school is in a very tiny town, and is flooded with students, so it's difficult to find a job while school is still in session. I've been trying, but nothing has panned out. Does anyone know if I'm eligible for unemployment benefits? I wasn't sure if I am because it was a work-study job, and I don't know if that makes a big difference. Any info or advice would be appreciated.
1 AnswerLaw & Legal9 years agoVeterinary Technician training-any insight from those in the field.?
I'm interested in training to become a veterinary technician, but I don't know much about the requirements, what I might expect from the programs and training, ect. I've been floundering in college for a while now, unsure of what to do. I love animals and I know I would be immensely happy if I could work with them in my career though, and I feel like this could be a good fit for me.
Can anyone who knows share any experience with what it's like and what I might expect if I pursue training as a veterinary technician? Exactly what kinds of classes and training did you have to do?Did you find it pretty difficult to do? Was it easy for you to find work after you got your certification? Any information or insight would be great. Thanks in advance. :)
1 AnswerHigher Education (University +)9 years agoSomeone backed into my car and tried to pin it on me... Do I have any options?
A week ago a police officer came to my door to question me about an incident involving my car. I park on the side of the street in my neighborhood, but because no spaces were open, I parked around the corner in a spot I usually don't use.
The cop showed me pictures he took of a parked orange car backed into mine, practically sitting on my bumper. I had parked there the night before behind a silver car and definitely didn't hit them. The guy who owns the orange car claimed that he parked there at 1 in the morning and no one was behind him; when he came out in the morning he supposedly found my car rammed into his bumper. This is a lie- I had parked my car in that area at 10:30 the night before and didn't drive it again after that. I also have a large dent in my fender from someone kicking it in. There is no damage to either of our bumpers- just the giant dent in my car. The cop and I both think that orange-car guy is probably responsible for that. The officer seemed to think the guy, or whoever was driving his car was coming back from the bars drunk.
The cop took my information and said he was going to talk to orange-car guy again, and also some neighbors to see if they saw/heard anything. I haven't heard back from him yet though. I filed a claim with my insurance just in case the other guy tries to pull something. So far, I haven't heard anything back from my insurance company.
Nothing like this has ever really happened to me, so I'm not sure if there's anything else I should do. I'm really upset that someone would do something so $hitty and then try to blame someone else for it... I really want some sort of justice done if at possible, but I don't really know if I realistically have any options in this situation. Any thoughts or advice? Thanks.
1 AnswerLaw Enforcement & Police10 years agoCut my gum while flossing, now it's red and swollen... how can I remedy this?
A couple of days ago, I think I cut part of my gum while flossing. It bled a little bit, but didn't seem to do much else. Later, and for the past couple of days since, I've noticed the gum area around that tooth and another one where I cut it with floss is red and a little swollen. There is some mild pain here and there throughout the day, but it's mostly uncomfortable pressure/throbbing, like I have something sharp stuck between my teeth or something.
Has anyone experienced this before? I'm worried that I caused a big infection and my teeth are going to fall out or something. How can I help this to heal? Do I need to go to a dentist for this? I'd like to avoid that if I can since I'm a student and I don't have any insurance. Thanks in advance for the advice.
4 AnswersDental10 years agoWhat could be wrong with my car? Rough idle, misfiring, hesitation. Help please?
I have a 96 Sunfire and lately it's been having a hard time turning over right away. It depends on the day, but sometimes I have to try to start it 5 or 6 times before it turns over.
After I get it started, sometimes it idles a little rough... the engine is making what I could best describe as a cooing noise, and it sometimes shudders just a little bit as well.
Sometimes when I try to accelerate after having it parked, it hesitates, sputtering and struggling to get going for a little bit- it sounds and acts like it's about the stall. I keep giving it gas to try to get it going and it eventually kicks in. It has stalled a couple of times during one of these episodes, but it started back up right away.
I recently had the battery replaced. Is this a problem with spark plugs? Any ideas as to what could be going on? I can't afford to take it to a garage, but I can buy fuel cleaner or little things like that if that's what it might need, and my dad is able to fix a good number of things on it if we can figure out what's wrong. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
9 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs10 years agoChristians: Nudity and "immodest" dress... how is this explained?
I'm just wondering about this... I know a lot of Christians are offended by nudity in art, forms of media, ect, and also by women wearing revealing clothing like low cut tops, short skirts, ect. I've even heard it described as unchristian and personally offensive to God himself.
I'm just curious as to why this is considered so bad? According to Christian theology, Adam and Eve were completely nude when they were created. Once they ate the forbidden fruit, they become aware of their nudity and they covered themselves because they were ashamed and conscious about it- part of the reason God got angry at them.
So, if God created humans in the nude and originally meant for them to stay that way, why is nudity and revealing clothing considered so bad among a lot of Christians? Thanks in advance.
11 AnswersReligion & Spirituality10 years agoBest drugstore powder foundation or finishing powder?
I need to find a powder foundation or finishing powder (preferably mineral) just to set my concealer and even out any shine. It seems like everything is either really chalky and just sits on the skin and makes me look dusty, or its filled with effing glitter and shimmer, which I hate. I want something that buffs into the skin nicely and makes my skin look natural. Anyone have any suggestions? I need a drugstore brand. Please tell me why you like what you recommend. Thanks in advance!
3 AnswersMakeup10 years agoI have federal work study, but can't get any hours. Anyone know about this?
I get federal work study as part of my financial aid package for college. I am allotted a specific amount of money that I can earn each semester. However, my both of the supervisers from the two work study jobs I've had said that each department at the university is given a certain number of hours they can give to students each semester that they can't go over.
With the hours he can give me, I don't even come close to making the amount it says I can make in my financial aid package. My superviser doesn't know the reason. I tried to talk to the financial aid office about it, and they don't seem to know, either. This seems really fishy to me... because I'm pretty sure the school is given those funds ahead of time to pay their student workers. My worst case scenario is that they are keeping student hours low and pocking the excess funds.
Does anyone know if this is common at most universities? Anyone know the reason for this bizarre policy? I really want to know why I can't work more hours and if there is some action I can take, I want to take it. Thanks in advance.
2 AnswersFinancial Aid10 years agoStabbing pain in upper back when inhaling... what could this be?
I took a nap earlier today and when I woke up, I noticed a sharp stabby pain in the upper portion of the right side of my back right below my shoulder blade when I take a deep breath. This has happened before, but after stretching a little bit, it went away. This has stuck around now for over 6 hours. I've stretched and taken some aspirin, but neither did anything.
The pain isn't constant, it's only when I inhale deeply, and if I lie in a certain position, it doesn't hurt when I inhale. I'm not having any wheezing or difficulty breathing or anything else. I just got over a cold a few days ago. I'm thinking maybe I just slept wrong and screwed something up in my back- but the hypochondriac in me is thinking I have a crazy tumor or lung cancer or something. Anyone know what this might be and how I can help to relieve it? Thanks in advance.
3 AnswersPain & Pain Management10 years agoAre these loose spark plugs? What could be wrong with my car?
I have a 96 Sunfire that until recently, has been running just fine. Lately though, more and more, it won't turn over on the first few tries. When it does, it makes odd noises- almost like a cooing noise? That's the best way I can describe it. Overall, it just sounds like it's running and idling a little rough, when it wasn't at all before. Another thing it's been doing is when I first start driving it and I accelerate, it seems to hesitate very subtly before mustering the power to get going. It moves, but it just seems like it doesn't have enough power right away.
I'm hoping this is nothing terrible... but I'm not sure. Could this be a case of bad or loose spark plug wires? I've also had instances of my starter CPU coming loose and needing to be plugged back in, but that doesn't really account for the odd noises and such. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
3 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs10 years agoWould it be appropriate to ask our landlord for money off of our rent this month?
At the end of May, our kitchen sink in our apartment stopped draining. Our landlord didn't show up to look at it for over a week, and then it took about another week for him to send guys here to replace the whole thing because it couldn't be fixed. So for over 2 weeks, we couldn't use our kitchen sink. We had to buy plastic utensils and plates, did what dishes we could in our bathtub, and we lost some food that was just too messy to cook without the use of a sink.
Our rent is $450 a month. Would it be reasonable to ask our landlord for a reduction on our rent this month because of the sink incident? If so, how much would be a reasonable amount to ask? Thank in advance.
5 AnswersLaw & Ethics10 years agoHow much could I reasonably ask for this car?
I have an automatic '96 Pontiac Sunfire coupe that I bought 5 years ago under an R title. Power locks, but not power windows and windows are tinted. Has a Pioneer CD player and am/fm radio. Air conditioning works, but a new AC compressor will be needed.
It has some body damage ( A few scratches and dings and some rust spots below the door and on the side near the tail light) Has 193,000 miles on it, though it could be less since the engine might not be original. Recently passed state inspection- got two 2 front tires, 2 new struts ( one front, one rear), and new control arm bushings. About 3 years ago, a cracked head was replaced with a used one and has been working well ever since.
Gets about 25 mpg and starts up every time. Overall, it runs and drives great and still has some good pick up for its age. Has rarely failed me.
How much do you honestly think I could get for this car? I was going to reluctantly sell it for $400, but then someone told me they thought I could get something more like $1000. What do you think and why? Thanks in advance.
5 AnswersBuying & Selling10 years agoMajor inconvenience with apartment- can I ask for some money off next month's rent?
My boyfriend and I started having trouble with our kitchen sink over 2 weeks ago- it just quit draining. We called our landlord and after multiple phone calls and voice mails, we got a hold of him. A few days later he showed up to work on it and determined that the whole sink and counter tops needed to be replaced. This was last Tuesday afternoon. He said he would be able to begin work on it later that week or "at the latest" today. He never showed up today and when I called him I got his voice mail. I left a message and he never returned my call.
In the meantime, we have no use of our kitchen sink and have had to buy paper plates and utensils and have been doing dishes in the bathtub- i.e. a huge pain the a$s. When he does finally fix the sink, would it be appropriate to ask for a small chunk off of our next month's rent? I was thinking to ask for $100. Does this sound reasonable? He's overall a nice, laid back person, and I want to keep things civil and on good terms. Any suggestions are appreciated.
