Is it a bad idea to get a tattoo right now especially that there is a tattoo policy change for the Army?

Well I graduated 29 June 2012. I really wanna tattoo but I'm on leave. I was told to wait til I get to my unit. Then I was told not to get one because of the change in policy. Anyway when is the right time to get a tattoo?

I've read and herd that the new policy is going to be something like tattoos can't be visible in summer pt uniform as oppose to to the old can not be visible in ACUs which people could get waivers for anyways the new regulations and policies don't take effect until October but I would wait and them ask your team leader when you get to your unit or if you do get one just don't get it on your arms legs or neck to be safe.

Congratulations on graduating. As for a tattoo, I know that you get extremely motivated right after graduation, but you definitely want to wait for two reasons.

1.) Your unit may frown on certain tattoos in certain areas, such as forearms or wherever they're not allowed anymore. It's best to check with your Chain of Command before getting any tattoo.

2.) If you get a super hooah tattoo, you WILL be ridiculed. My friend throughout my entire time in the Army from Basic until my discharge got a tattoo that said "Death From Above" on his forearm immediately after we graduated Airborne school. Naturally, he was made fun of for it. (in good spirits, nothing that makes you feel too bad) After that, he went to great lengths to hide it from view.

So it's just better to wait. Especially if you want to get a tattoo that's Army related.

I would also suggest waiting until you're assigned to a unit.

Don't jump the gun. In fact, I would suggest waiting until the changes are finalized before doing anything.

Justin Bieber has a tattoo. You're in good company.

  • How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.
  • Wait until they finish the policy change. Then ask if your still allowed, if you are then you can get what ever.

How about never? How do you think that Transformers tat will look in 20 years? Will it still be hip? Will you still be proud? Or will you be like so many others, and wish you'd never walked in that door?

    Tattoos are a dumb fad.
