Why doesn't America use the metric system?

I recently switched over and I find it so much simpler to use.

My height, 190 cm

Or 1 meter and 90 cm.

Why doesn't America switch over like the rest of the world?

Update:

@Winston smith

I prefer to use Fahrenheit over celcius. Smaller measurements the better. For things like golf I use yards. For diving I use meters. For my height I use centimeters. Some things I find it useful. I prefer not to use celcius unless I get to freezing point.

    The US is converting to metric measures especially regarding manufactured goods and products. All American cars (ie; Ford GM and Chrysler) are designed and manufactured using metric measures. The Harley Davidson V-Rod motorcycle is designed and manufactured in metric. Some other American companies and organisations that have adopted metric measures are..IBM, NASA, and HP. The advancement of metrication is occurring but its mainly hidden (hidden metrication) and many people are unaware of it.

    However I think your question was about the continued use of US Customary measures in normal day to day living. Why doesn't the US convert to metric?

    There are a number of reasons.

    A perception that US Customary measures, have served us well, why change, and that the US was developed and built with inches, feet, yards, and miles etc.

    A perception that the US is world leader and that any foreign system must be inferior.

    A mindset that has been educated from a young age in US Customary measures is difficult to unlearn and learn metric measures. Messy conversions become the norm because of referring metric back to US Customary.

    Many are unfamiliar with metric measures and see no advantage in changing. Many fear change.

    Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson were supporters of the metric system and although their proposals for the US to adopt the metric system failed the advancement of metric measures worldwide continues. About 95% of the worlds population use metric measures and more than 170 countries have officially adopted the metric system as their primary measurement system..

    They've adopted to itn if they switched over it'd get all confusing. They know what they mean so... If we all used the same systems life would be boring.
