The weather will be nice in October.
You may need a sweather or light jacket, but it may also be warm. Rain is possible.
Weather forecasters are right when they talk about what the weather was like yesterday, but their accuracy suffers when they try to predict what it will be in the future. And October is pretty far in the future!

You do not say when in October your class is coming but Sarah is just teasing you. Whatever's answer is accurate, except she should have added that most of September is likewise in the period of Boston's best weather. Just lovely, usually, between September 10 and October 20. The least number of rainy days. Daytime temperatures usually between 65 and 75F. In the last third of October there may be a "cold snap" of daytime temperatures between 52 and 60F but nothing fiercer. The main difference is that 'noreaster storms usually begin about then, with soaking rains and strong winds.
If your trip is between October 1 - 20 my main question would be: How the heck did your school manage to get hotel reservations?? That is the main time that people come to Boston from all over the world to see the beautiful New England autumn foliage (which is not so brilliant in Boston but the beautiful areas begin about 20 miles to the west and north) and usually there is not a hotel room to be had!

variable
spring and fall in New England are hit or miss
some years Octobers are very warm and sunny, other years they are cold and damp
check the forecast before you go, though a good idea will be to pack both clothes for cold and warm weather
mid October is a good time to go, fall foliage will be great, and New England has excellent foliage in even the worst years
October is the last month in any given year to visit Massachusetts, any later and it will be too cold and that is a promise

October is the best weather of the year. Rarely goes below freezing. Jeans and sweaters are good, a light jacket is also good. The weather can vary quite a bit, so check once we get closer.
