Why is (most packages of) regular strip bacon in Canada considerably leaner than that sold in the USA?? I am NOT referring to what is called "Canadian bacon" in the USA, but the usual strip bacon mostly grilled for breakfast?? (I have homes in both countries and this has always intrigued me). Is it because hogs are slaughtered at different weights or a meatier breed is raised in Canada?

Before putting this question on Yahoo Answers I noticed a prior question of whether such a thing as lactose free cheese exists. The winning Answer claimed that "lactose free cheese" is something that tastes like cheese but is made from vegetables. There were other answers but none that said that "lactose free cheese" is dairy. Well, I have homes in both the USA and (Quebec) Canada. I have never noticed a package of American-made cheese labelled as lactose free but in Quebec almost all cheeses are so labelled!!!!!!!!!!!! And they taste like regular, good cheese. So how can they or any cheese be lactose free????????????

Why is bacon in Canada so much leaner than that in the USA?? I am not referring to what Americans call `Canadian bacon` which is what Canadians call back bacon. I am referring to regular strip bacon. It always has less fat and more meat in Canada.

Is it possible for humans to mate with any close relative ape species much as horses can be mated with donkeys to produce (sterile) mules?? If so is there record of any mad scientists actually doing it?

If so how did they discover them, not having diving equipment?? Did they design lobster traps similar to what is in use today to catch them?? If they did not know about lobsters how did the European settlers learn about them?

Why is it that the abbreviation for University of Vermont is "UVM" and not "UVT"??

In a magazine article I read some years ago it was said that the French word 'ordinateur' for computer was not invented by the French academie or any other French source but actually by IBM, because the English word 'computer' when said in French sounded like some part of female anatomy. Well, I visit Montréal a lot and I have asked several people what this would be and each one told me he or she had no idea. Can anybody out here tell me? And if it is avulgarism in Parisian French might in not be in Quebecoise French??

Why on earth is there no separate word for "ale" in French?? And that all alcoholic malt beverages are labeled "Biere Ale" as if there is no difference???

The American soft drink industry fights hard against states subjecting sodas (and what are considered junk foods) to state sales taxes. Well, the Canadian province of Quebec charges its sales tax (15%!) on sodas, plus sodas' regular price is considerably more than in the States. Is Quebeckers personal consumption lower than that of Americans??

As far as I know in French the word for both beer and for ale is biere. But ale is made differently than beer and generally has a fuller taste. Why no word for ale in French?

At the moment (Tuesday, 26, October) there is a great storm centered around Minnesota and Wisconsin and adjoining Canada with barometric pressure as low as most category 2 or 3 hurricanes. Why then are the winds only 60-70MPH instead of the 100 - 120 MPH that such hurricanes would have?

I have residences in Boston and Montréal. In both cities, unlike years ago, they do not shorten the commuter trains for off peak service. Can someone explain to me why not? It certainly seems to me that the cost in wear and tear and added fuel would be more than the labor costs in de-coupling and re-coupling a few attached rail cars a couple of times per day.

Or why not do as I saw in Switzerland and have short (2 or 3 car) trains that operate at off-peak times which supplement service to near-to-core-city stations at rush hours?

Why is it that the French for lemonade - limonade - is so close to the Engliah, instead of being 'citonade' or similar?
