I don't know about aboriginals, but I do know that lobster used to be peasant food before the days of refrigerated storage and shipping. About 120 years ago, when fishermen came back in to port, they would have fish and other seafood. The lobsters were often given or sold to the poor very cheaply. When fast refrigerated shipping became possible (trains), some marketing genius figured that people that lived away from the coast would pay good money for lobster as a "delicacy". Before those days, it was considered peasant food. And most native peoples including aboriginals would eat what was plentiful and available.
