Microwave stopped working after sparks. What can I do?

The microwave was purchased new in 2010. It's an Emerson. I was making a baked potato in the microwave. I wrapped it in foil, turned it on, and it wasn't getting quite as hot as I had wanted (or expected). I gave it a few more minutes. Still only somewhat warm. So I cut it open, and placed it back in the microwave with the foil. Well, the microwave began sparking and it now doesn't turn on. What did I do wrong? And is there a simple way that I can make the microwave work again?

Thanks!

Sometimes you can replace the fuse. Take the cove off and look for one. It happen to me once and cost 59 cents. and some time.

When you opened the foil you left edges which cause a surge and likely blew the fuse as a couple of people stated.

You can actually use tinfoil in a microwave as you already found out.

BUT when baking a potatoe, do not use foil. place the potatoe on a microwave safe dish; poke it with a fork in many places so it will not explode and cook as the microwave directions state.

If you are cooking something like a whole chicken, turkey, duck, goose; you can cover the ends of the legs with small pieces of tinfoil. Make sure it is wrapped tight or it will spark if the are any sharp edges.

Never put foil in a microwave, or any other metal. Buy a new one it's the cheapest fix.
