Do not that many people know that "Separation of Church and State" appears nowhere in the Constitution?
It was written in a letter one of the Founding Fathers wrote to the other, but that's it.

To understand the Constitution and Constitutional Law, you also need to read the pivotal and major decisions over the past two hundred years.
Supreme Court Justices do not just read the Constitution. The "separation of Church and State" doctrine has been cited and used many times in Supreme Court cases.

It's a convention and not a law.
The Constitution allows people to worship how they choose. Separation of Church and State is not equal to secularism. It's merely the idea that government cannot prevent the practice of religion. We've gotten to a point where separation of state is used to keep people from being offended instead of keeping people free.

getting tired of this OLD argument.
yes, EVERYONE knows the phrase doesn't appear in the Constitution.
The principle, however, does...."Congress shall pass no law RESPECTING an establishment of religion".
separation of church and state" ensures that the above is adhered to.
"privacy" doesn't appear in the Constitution either. Do we have such a right?
How about "private property"...not in there either.
"Air Force"? Unconstitutional?
FBI, CIA, NSA....?

While religion is the foundation for ethics and laws, our government is founded on a different philosophical orientation than a religious base.
Religion does not make persons good people, too often in history, religion has been abused for the purpose of harming or killing people of a population.
The 1st Amendment solves the potential for that abuse, freedom of religion also includes the right to be free of imposed religious beliefs of others.
If an individual believes their religion makes them a good person, that's great, they need to respect the rights of others according to our legal standards. In absence of respecting the rights of other according to our laws, religion is basically useless in American society.

Separation of church and state is a court implementation of the 1st Amendment.
The only way to prevent government from establishing religion, which would violate the amendment, is to separate government and religion.

Funny story, many also believe America is a "Christian Nation", even though that is not found in the constitution either. It is just a widely held belief by "Christians".
