I want to listen to good music. Help?

I had a sheltered childhood and I have a lot of catching up to do. People seem to judge other people based on their taste in music and I don't want all my new friends to think I'm a tool. Will you help me to not be a tool? Please list name, genre and what makes their music so great for bands that deserve to be listened to.

Try browsing around musicians' official Youtube channels (believe me, there are A LOT of them); most of them are under VEVO now, but there are still some indepedent, though. Anyway, here are some bands/artists that I like; you can check them out on the same site, see if it's your piece of cake:

    • Vienna Teng; 'Gravity': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8nypWKa_aU

→ Genre: Piano/Chillout; I'd say I love Vienna's music because it's really calming and simply wonderful; it's basically something you can listen to whenever you're feeling down, stressed, or worn out - it instantly brings smile to your face. (:

    • Coldplay; 'Viva La Vida'; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvgZkm1xWPE

→ Genre: Alternative Rock; Coldplay's music is very inspirational and metaphorical, but as a band I specifically admire them because they turned down (on multiple occasions) multi-million dollar contracts from big corporations who wanted to play their songs in their commercials - they simply said: "We wouldn’t be able to live with ourselves if we sold the songs’ meanings like that."

    • Within Temptation; 'Memories': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsQIOgkZt68

Genre: Symphonic Metal; WT's music varies from powerful and strong to calming and lullaby-like; basically, they've got a song for your every mood, hehe. On the other note, I just adore female-fronted metal in general; those singers should be a great example of how strong and independent every woman can and must be.

    • Epica; 'Solitary Ground': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eb17Yc1a8lE

Genre: Symphonic Metal; Once again, female-fronted metal, with the absolutely wonderful, powerful, and tallented Simone Simons as a lead vocal (honestly, it only took me about one song to completely fall in love with her voice). Their songs carry deep meanings and a heavy criticism of the modern society and religion, and also vary from metal to piano; anyway, worth definitelly worth giving a chance.

    • Delain; 'Come Closer': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvvjECwJ5h8

→ Genre: Symphonic Metal; Yes, yes, I admit; I do love this genre. (; The style is very similar to the previous two bands I mentioned; in fact, the band was founded by Martijn Westerholt, who happens to be the former pianist of Within Temptation, so it figures.

    • Regina Spektor; 'Samson': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p62rfWxs6a8

→ Genre: Piano; Calming, tranquill piano music, with deep meaning, and Regina's brilliant voice; honestly, nothing more to say here. (:

    • Fiona Apple; 'Get Gone': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F76BU-tMI3Q

→ Genre: Piano; A powerful and strong personality, and has the same powerful songs and lyrics; although, some of her songs have been discussed as controversial, and her singing voice doesn't happen to be everyone's piece of cake, so don't worry if her music doesn't especially appeal to you.

    • Emilie Autumn; 'Willow': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS_23r0z2Xg

→ Genre: Violin/Piano/Industrial; Emilie's songs go from crazy (believe me, plain crazy) all the way to gentle love-tunes, but I guess you can figure that out from the genre itself, really. Songs carry powerful messages and a strong criticism to the way women are and have been treated throughout the history. Still, similarly to Fiona Apple - not exactly everyone's piece of cake.

    • Dido; 'Thank You': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS_23r0z2Xg

→ Genre: Pop/Chillout; Calming, cheerful, and loveable; I guess that's the best way to describe Dido and her musical style, really. She's one of those artists who'll have at least one song in their discography you'll be able to say you fancy, no matter what your musical preferences are (for the most, it's exactly this song, 'Thank You').

    • Paramore; 'That's What You Get': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kz6hNDlEEg

→ Genre: Power Pop/Alternative Rock; Well, I could say their music is meaningful or powerful, but I'd kind of be lying; they're pretty much just another tween-sensation band. Still, that doesn't mean their songs aren't catchy or loveable. (; If anything, it's a good kind of music for the summer season.

The advice I can give you is to be yourself; don't pretend you like something if you don't, only to keep your 'friends' satisfied, because the whole act will just end up being a really frustrating burden for you to carry around, and leave you wondering who you really are under all that pretending (and I'm not talking only about music here...). Listening to music is a stress-relieving activity, and therefore there's not such thing as a good or a bad kind of music; so, don't judge other people for what they like, and more importantly, don't judge it before you listen to it!

Okay, that was long. xD Anyway, have a nice day, and I hope you'll find something you like in here!~

I don't know what time period your childhood was in but a good way to catch up is to go on iTunes and check out their 'iTunes Essentials'. They make ones for every genre, time period, and year so you can go year by year looking through good artists from your time. Hope it helps!
