What is wrong with my mom?

Usually my mom is like really chill and funny, but for the last month or so she's been really annoying and clingy and then she'll go bipolar and find the littlest things to get mad at me about that she's never gotten mad at me about before, and then just last week we went on a cruise together and everything was fine and then I realized I forgot something at home and I told her (It was nothing important.) and she was like "you're an idiot. you're a freaking idiot." and today she got all clingy and was like "we never spend time together anymore." and I said "Because you insult me every chance you get." and I reminded her how she called me an idiot, and she denied it and said she didn't and when I tried to tell her that she did she just got mad and told me to leave. What the hell is her problem. She's 49 and I'm just wondering if she's going through menopause or something because she needs a damn good excuse for this kind of crap.

    Hi Darling,

Welcome to the world of a perimenopausal mother ! I had one too once and I almost lost it myself.

This sounds very much like the very, very infant stages of change of life also sometimes the hormone replacement they put them on or meds let's say can give them manic mood swings during the transition, I don't envy it that's for sure. My mum was semi decent before menopause and then when that came to town she was like a permenant Dr Jekyll, then the next minute as serene as a blue ocean, I can hear the psycho music now playing in my head as I flashback. Just try and be there for her, if possible, be good and gentle to yourself and know that this too shall pass. I hate the person that turned that into a quote because it doesn't help at the time hahaha I also don't know how old you are but drinking is also good to take the edge of a bi polar bear mother. Good luck sweetie. Keep us updated.

I hate to bring this up, but do you think your mom could be on something? It may not even be illegal drugs, but sometimes legal prescription drugs can cause adverse side effects. If not, then maybe she has secretly been dealing with a hard personal problem, and doesn't know how to deal with it. Maybe you could find out more by sitting down and talking to her. If that doesn't work and she totally freaks out on you, then I would just consider ignoring her. If she's acting like this on purpose, maybe she's just doing it to get attention. When you ignore her when she acts mean to you, it shows that it doesn't bother you when she acts this way so she's wasting her time, and she will probably stop. If you don't think it it any of these, and it just keeps on getting worse, then maybe you and/or her should talk to someone. If you aren't an adult, you could talk to your school counselor about it, and s/he might try and talk to your mom about it. Usually if you bring in a third party people listen more. I hope this helps, and good luck!

Not really..menopause cant be the reason. My mom is the same age and im 17. earlier she used to be so cool and calm at every small issue and bigger issues were also not a problem for her. but nowadays she gets mad at whatever i say. i don't know clearly but maybe women at this age start loosing temper easily and maybe that's the reason why our moms behave this way.

P.S. my mom got her tubectomy done 10 yrs back. that's why i say it's not cause of menopause
