Kennel Cough? PLEASE help!?

I have to four week puppy (orphaned because her mother abandoned her) and she's been doing great, but recently I noticed she does this hacking sound every once in a while, mostly after she eats (Milk and a little soft puppy starter food) and she has a little runny nose. She's not acting weird and still sleeps, eats, and plays a little as usual so I didn't think anything of it. I'm sitting with her now and she's laying in her knennel and she did the little hacking twice. So, I figured I'd look it up. Could she possibly have Kennel Cough? Also, how can I treat it at home. At the moment I can't take her to the vet so working with her at home is all I can do. I read some things about if you rub their throat and they start to hack, it means they have it. I tried and she didn't do anything. They said you can give them honey to sooth their throat, but I wasn't sure with her age or how much to give her. This won't kill her right? I'd be heart broken. Please let me know and thank you!

If you got her from the shelter, it is very possibly kennel cough. Keep in mind that just because she was laying in her kennel when she got it doesn't make it kennely cough. But from what you described that's probably what it is.

When we rescued my dog he had kennel cough. I don't think we did anything about. Of course, he was a year old. Still, I think it just kind of goes away on it's own. It's sort of like a cold. I don't know how old puppies have to be to get shots (I've never had one), but make sure she gets the Bordatella. This will prevent kennel cough from coming back if you ever board her while on vacation.

As for treatment, I think it goes away on it's own after 2-3 weeks. Again, I'm not sure. I was like 7 when we got my dog. He's been in my life forever. I guess it wouldn't hurt to at least call the vet and tell them. You might want to take her in in case it isn't kennel cough, and since she's so young. I wouldn't try any home remedies until you know for sure what it is.

First if you are giving her cow's milk it is probably making her sick. Give her puppy milk replacement formula. The cough could be allergy to the cow's milk, as mild as kennel cough or it could be something much more serious. Only a Vet can tell for sure.

For now keep her warm and dry and NO MORE cow's milk. Even plain water is better. If you have a steamer, put it in the room. Take her to the Vet as soon as you are able.

Coughing has many different causes. Being that your puppy is this young, you need to get her to a vet, because when puppies this young get sick, they go downhill extremely fast and depending on what is wrong with them, they can die. Why do you have this puppy if you can't afford to take her to a vet? That is a must! You need to find a way to take her in and you need to do it very fast. Her life may depend on it.

First, make sure you don't give her milk we drink give her puppy replacement milk its alot healthier.

Also I would take her to the wet, I had a dog with the same problem, This can be caused by heart-worms if your puppy has this she can be drowning her self. If you are able to get her to the vet ASAP the better.

Take her to the vet, better safe than sorry. Heart worm will also cause coughing and is fatal if not treated in the early phases.

    Hi,

Money or not,you need to take her to the vet..At 4 weeks old it's not wise to do self treatment at home..The vet can set up monthly payments for you..Don't be sorry, take her to the vet..

    Your Friend,

    Sandy
