So a camera snapped a picture of me exceeding the speed limit...?
They sent me a notice in the mail today saying that I need to pay the civil penalty of $168.
It was in a different State than I live in and, no matter what, I plan on not paying out of principle.
But I have two questions:
Half of me wants to write up a letter, or some kind of response...
The city (Sioux Falls, Iowa) contracted with a private company, Redflex Traffic Systems, Inc. in Phoenix Arizona.
Check here for some interesting information, critical of Redflex: http://www.fireredflex.com/
So if I respond in some way, I would bring up issues like that: how shady the company is, some of their nefarious practices and the trend of municipalities dropping them.
But the other half of me is thinking I should just throw the notice away.
The notice says at the bottom that since it is a civil penalty neither the DMV nor my insurance provider will be notified, but if I fail to pay then a $35 late fee will be tacked on and they will hire a collections agency to come after me.
I have no problem telling the collections agency off either, but if I choose to do this, it would have an impact on my credit?
Other than that, what are your opinions on the issue?
The principle is that speed limits are stupid and arbitrary. They don't save lives, they actually cost lives.
Speed cameras are placed to generate revenue, not to ensure safety. The government can suck it. They're not getting my money.
I know some of you cowards would just bow down and give the government any amount of money they demanded that you pay them, but I'm not going to.
I'm not interested in your opinion of whether I should pay the penalty or not...because I'm not...so don't bother.
I am just asking about the method you think I should go about, from the two I proposed, and if a city government can send me to collections, and if it will affect my credit. That is all.

If you do not pay they will file a small claims suit against you in Sioux Falls. If you do not show up they will win by default. That will then show up as a judgment on your credit, so yes, it will affect your credit score - significantly.
If you do show up to fight it, remember that in a civil suit they only have to satisfy the judge that you were speeding 'by a preponderance of the evidence', not by the 'beyond reasonable doubt' standard of a criminal action. Also, in a civil action there is no protection against self-incrimination. They can call you to the stand and ask you if you were speeding. If it was not you driving they can ask you who the driver is - and you must answer. This is different from fighting a camera 'ticket', where you have the right to not take the stand, and not answer questions.

you would be able to have been 5 mph over the decrease quite of three or probably even 10 mph over the decrease. you would be able to have been clocked as you entered the fee zone quite than on the 2nd the image flashed. 3 MPH isn't lots of a margin for blunders. without a human operator on the radar, i contemplate whether the computerized equipment is physically powerful adequate information to convict you of the offense. in case you have the time, pass forward and contest the quotation and make the city produce their information which you have been dashing. If it is achieveable your speed replaced into extra beneficial than you theory everywhere for the duration of the zone, they in all probability do not could instruct your speed replaced into unsafe, merely quicker than the prima facie decrease provided via Washington's Revised Statutes. Even a million mph over the decrease remains a contravention and the decide will locate you responsible if the state can instruct the radar replaced into working wisely and the fee replaced into precise. there is a few thing stated as the "cosine ingredient" in radar speed measurement. It has to do with the deviation between precisely ninety stages between your automobile and the radar source. The radar's indicated speed measurement would be SLOWER than your truthfully speed whilst measued at an perspective. So, probability is you have been going quicker than the radar readout. A radar expert can calculate the best perspective and testify to the cosine effect and your truthfully speed which would be extra beneficial than the radar's indicated speed. As yet another respondant pronounced, it is in all probability a nil tolerance ingredient. you need to get a letter interior the mail letting you recognize approximately being clocked dashing in a school zone -- you recognize -- a guilt holiday. you in all probability won't get a value ticket. merely crawl with the aid of those aspects next time. of course, there's a venture or they does not pass with the aid of all the hassle. you're turning out to be the skill to decelerate the jerk in the back of you who could in any different case have killed a newborn dashing. let us know what occurs.

And what principle would that be? You were speeding, you got caught, you need to pay the ticket. Depending on state law, they can suspend your license if you don't pay. It will stay on your credit until it

If you have a ticket un-paid the police are aloud to arrest and detain you until the ticket is paid off or you have done jail time.
