What is with kids these days and their music?

I know. You've heard this before and I know not all kids are like this, but I feel most are. To me, music isn't "just an opinion", because how could anyone possibly like big time rush, miley cyrus, justin beiber, or any disney kids, one direction, nicki manaj, katy perry, etc. (there are so many). It's all show, some can't even write, they just dance around like idiots holding a hand to their chest like their actually into it and "deep". A lot of them can't even play an instrument (remember, I said "a lot"). What happened to kids liking Ozzy, The Beatles, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, etc. A lot of kids nowadays don't even know who The Beatles are! Why don't their parents show them what real music is? I'm almost 20 and I grew up around people who listened to Justin, BTR, etc. There was a girl a grade younger than me who wanted to marry him and still does! She says The Beatles, etc. suck. Does she even listen to them? All of them were unique (Ringo not as much, but still a great drummer). They had soul, and were true and Paul still is. What happened to that kind of music? Then there's hip-hop and rap. Yuck. And country(but that I'll leave to opinion). My brother and our friend are going to play Hurt by Johnny Cash, "Changes" by Black Sabbath, and "Working Class Hero" by John Lennon. Another kid and his friends are doing hiphop dancing. You know what's sad? Most of the kids will prefer the hiphop, I wouldn't be surprise if none of them even knew what my brother and friend were singing let alone who it's by. It just makes me sad and I had to relieve myself of all of this that was bottled up inside. I know a lot of you will disagree and say, "Justin Beiber is the best! I love him and quit hating on him!" Well, I hate you for thinking that and I really hope someday you'll grow up. Some will agree, I'm hoping so I don't feel as alone as I felt in high school with as of these thoughts. Lastly, I apologize that my thoughts are so long. I hate reading long questions so, for that, I am sorry. But thanks for reading all of this if you did :)

    Another retarded rant.

Hey you Hendrix, Dylan, Joplin fans... There has never been more good music available at any time in history, and it is right under your nose, only a mouseclick away, easier to find by anyone than it ever has been. Tons of it, by new and vibrant bands who deserve a listen instead of being ignored by so-called lovers of so-called "real" music... There is literally not enough hours in a day for anyone to hear it all.

It is just lazy and uninformed to claim otherwise.

Firstly, I am a teen and I dislike most of the artists you listed (except Katy Perry - who does write her own songs). I also think the music you like is quite old- Hendrix has been dead a while and so are most of The Beetles. Plus Metallica are severely overrated in my eyes as 16 year old who is into modern rock. I appreciate the old stuff - and the new pop stuff is mostly rubbish. But you can find some good music out there - people have taken inspiration from the oldies and created something new that I and others enjoy. You just have to put up with generic music, but deep down there is some amazing stuff in this industry. It's not all bad.

I am 14 yrs old and I do agree with what you are saying I am not a huge fan of any of those pop stars but I still like some of there songs. One reason I think why people like btr and justin bieber is becuz there the newest 21st century so called hotties how they can sing our new type of music such as rap. Btr reminds me of the Beatles younger and hip jb reminds me of justin temberlake. Another is how they're diffrent from others like btr has a amateur show on nick which gets little kids to be fans, justin bieber was discovered by someone famous and is another white kid that acts gang like". Nicki minan is probably known for her raps and sex apeal and strangeness. Weird is getting hotter and hotter maybe y people dress like they do now. Another way is the fact that btr and jb are quite young and every body's now able to some how meet them with the thought of one day they'll "fall in love". Every thing in the teens and kids life are hormones and imagination its now important to be pretty and the one that's different in a good way. That's my guess or else we're just weird like that soon all this music and shows are going to get as old as the beetles one day. Miley Cyrus got old she doesn't even work for disney anymore. She's herself now.

  • I agree and disagee with certain points of your argument. I agree that the music taste of most teens these days is very sad. However, music IS a matter of opinion, some people just don't have ears for real music so they like artists like the ones you listed. While all era's had their bad points, this is by far the worst. I always feel so weird around all my friends because they all like those horrible artists, and then I like indie, old rock, acoustic, underground etc.

First off I think i am in love. =) Hehe just kidding but seriously every chick i meet likes the entertainment music and not the art music. Its a shame. I think it just goes to show that our society is definitely on a downward spiral. I think its a war against the minds of the youth. If big money can get kids interested in thoughtless ego acts that encourage materialism, selfishness, and alpha male statuses then they win the war against the human mind. Its a scary thing and i have never quite understood it. I raised a flag against it for a long time but i am out numbered and I just go with music is subjective. At least i know for myself the their "music" is a entertainment platform that helps them live with themselves because they are narcissistic drama queens/kings. Swag Swag Swag... =) Thank goodness there are still "humans" out there. Keep it real.

Source(s): Tool, Rage Against The Machine, Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins, Deftones, Korn, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Richie Havens, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, King Crimson, Portishead, Bjork, and many more who have enhanced my life threw their beautiful art.

Don't take it so personally. Seriously, just ignore the people who don't have good taste (which is your opinion, no matter what you insist), and you'll be so much happier. I never liked most of the music my peers listen to, but it's not like I was forced to listen to it. Really, you're just creating something to complain about.

I stopped reading after "A lot of kids nowadays don't even know who the Beatles are"

I don't know a single person, young or old, that does not know of the most popular band in history

well, apparently I don't know my own generation as well as I thought I did... I am very bad a relating to a bulk of the people my age

Look, I'll agree with you saying pop music today blows. But seriously, people have been saying "kids these days music sucks" for decades. Parents hated Ozzy when Ozzy was in his prime, just like you hate Bieber.

Hurt is by Nine Inch Nails. Johnny Cash covered it.
