Curiously, I learned about On the Waterfront from watching Quiz Show with Ralph Feinnes. Got the opportunity to actually watch the film a year or so ago when I found a DVD. Must say, its one of my favorite old movies along with Casa Blanca. Classic! That scene when he was talking to his brother in the car... and that final scene where he stood up to the union boss, were epic!
Jack Nicholson had always been great. The best I've seen him in is from A Few Good Men. I saw him in Shining too, but in my opinion, its A Few Good Men where he gave his best. He outshone both Tom Cruise and Demi Moore and gave the most memorable scene in that movie.
This is a tough call for me. Seeing as both actors were in 2 of my favorite movies of all time, I have to call it a draw.

Jack Nicholson is an excellent infighter but has a poor jab and has a problem with moving opponents. Brando has power in both hands, but can fight technical and has excellent head movement. Brando KOS Nicholson RD 7

bq: Jack Nicholson in The Shining if my favorite

The Gddfather usually let his henchmen to do the dirty work while Jack personally does the job himself even when he was trying to terrorize those biggies visiting the LA Forum in the NBA. I say, Jack.
By the way, two of the finest Hollywood actors ever.
Haven't seen the film but given your impression of Tony Galento's performance and/ior fond memories of that flick, it could have been one of the greatest by a former boxer.
