Sonicwall TZ100w cannot get DHCP address on WAN port from DSL modem?

Hello, I am in San Francisco and use ATT DSL service (not Uverse, regular DSL). I have a Sonicwall TZ100w. I set the X1 WAN port to use DHCP and plug an Ethernet cable into the DSL modem. Initially, I get an IP Address on the X1 port of the Sonicwall. At some point it loses the address and cannot get another one. If I plug the ATT DSL modem into a computer, no problem. The problem seems to be between the Sonicwall and DSL modem. Power cycling the devices does not help. I found solutions on Google that said to:

1. configure X1 (WAN) port on Sonicwall to use 10Mbps Full duplex and 2. clone the MAC address from the computer that works when connected directly to the DSL modem. Neither solution worked.

2. When attempting to renew the DHCP lease, the Sonicwall log shows a UDP packet being dropped, source 192.168.1.254 (ATT DSL modem), destination 239.200.x.x (forgot the rest), port 1900.

Funny thing is, if I put a Linksys wireless router in between the 2 devices, everything works. (DSL modem plugged into WAN of Linksys router, Linksys router LAN port to WAN of Sonicwall). The DSL modem gives an IP to the Linksys, which then gives an IP to the Sonicwall. I can release and renew the IP address from the DSL modem to the Linksys and have no problem.

While this works, it is a ridiculous solution. Anyone have the same problem? Any tips? Thanks!

Update:

rewazi: thanks for the reply. The DSL modem is DHCP, the account does not have a Static Address. So the DSL modem should give the X1 port a DHCP address (public address) that the Sonicwall can use to get to the Internet. I cannot assign X1 a static address since my account does not have one.

I also tried putting the DSL modem into bridge mode and doing PPPoE from the Sonicwall. Still the same issue: X1 port does not get an IP from the DSL modem. I suspect a communication issue between the DSL modem and Sonicwall. :-(

Where's your dhcp server located? and have you thought about statically assigning the IP address on x1?

    edit:

Hmm... I think the packet that's being dropped when you try to renew the lease is the modem checking to see if your sonicwall is still there. The packet is dropped, the modem thinks your sonicwall is no longer there, and so stops providing the dhcp service. As to why your sonicwall is dropping the packet I have no idea :p I recommend posting this to the cisco forums. I'm sure someone over there will have an in depth answer for you

    Hope that helps! :D
