  • Sonicwall TZ100w cannot get DHCP address on WAN port from DSL modem?

Hello, I am in San Francisco and use ATT DSL service (not Uverse, regular DSL). I have a Sonicwall TZ100w. I set the X1 WAN port to use DHCP and plug an Ethernet cable into the DSL modem. Initially, I get an IP Address on the X1 port of the Sonicwall. At some point it loses the address and cannot get another one. If I plug the ATT DSL modem into a computer, no problem. The problem seems to be between the Sonicwall and DSL modem. Power cycling the devices does not help. I found solutions on Google that said to:

    1. configure X1 (WAN) port on Sonicwall to use 10Mbps Full duplex and 2. clone the MAC address from the computer that works when connected directly to the DSL modem. Neither solution worked.

    2. When attempting to renew the DHCP lease, the Sonicwall log shows a UDP packet being dropped, source 192.168.1.254 (ATT DSL modem), destination 239.200.x.x (forgot the rest), port 1900.

Funny thing is, if I put a Linksys wireless router in between the 2 devices, everything works. (DSL modem plugged into WAN of Linksys router, Linksys router LAN port to WAN of Sonicwall). The DSL modem gives an IP to the Linksys, which then gives an IP to the Sonicwall. I can release and renew the IP address from the DSL modem to the Linksys and have no problem.

While this works, it is a ridiculous solution. Anyone have the same problem? Any tips? Thanks!

  • Is 50% a reasonable management fee?

My friend's brother-in-law has an investment fund that invests in and flips houses. They buy a distressed property, fix it, sell it, make the money. They have an investment fund of 7 people. 3 of the 7 are "management", they find the houses, fix them (or contract out the work), then sell them for a profit. The profit structure is: management takes 50% of the profit off the top. The other 50% is distributed among "investors." I postulate that management can also "invest" (so they take 50% off the top, then their share of the remaining 50%).

My question: does this sound reasonable? Is it standard for that type of business? I know some hedge funds that take 20% of profit as incentive to do well, so 50% seemed ridiculous. Or am I just ignorant?

  • How can I transfer a brokerage margin account balance to a credit card?

No, I am not crazy. I have a $30,000 margin balance at my broker on which I pay 7%. There are currently 0% balance transfer offers at some credit card companies. In the past, I was able to have them send me a balance transfer check, deposit that into my bank account and then spend the money as I chose. No more. Now they want to send the money directly to the other credit card companies. Of course, I have $0 debt. So how can I take advantage of the 0%? I pay my broker 7% and want to somehow get that money to a credit card so I can do a 0% balance transfer.

How can I do that? Or is there another way I can take advantage of the offer? Thanks!

  • In-lieu vs. Qualified dividends?

I just talked to a customer service rep at my online stock trading brokerage. Th long story is he informed me that my holdings have two types of dividends: qualified dividends and in-lieu dividends. He told me in-lieu dividends are dividends received on shares that have been loaned out to other people. So if I have 100 shares of XYZ stock, the broker loaned it to someone else and the company paid dividends, they show as In Lieu. When I asked if that means they are no longer "Qualified" in terms of preferential tax treatment, he said that is correct.

Does this make sense? Is what he is telling me true? I can have shares of a company, the broker can loan them out and as a result I lose the preferential taxt treatment on the dividends of those shares?

  • Turning voltage on/off to trigger another device?

I have 2 devices. One is a trigger that when switched on, sends out 5volts and triggers another device, in this case a video recorder. When I turn off the switch, the video recorder is supposed to turn off, but it doesn't.

I don't know much about electronics. A friend of mine told me the switch sends out 5 volts which triggers the camera and therefore everything is working correctly. I have several of these devices. In all except one turning the switch on triggers the camera, which then records. Turning the switch of makes the camera stop recording.

Am I correct in assuming there is something wrong with the connection between the two devices for the set that does not stop the camera from recording when the switch is turned off? If all it does is send 5volts when switched on, should it not cut-off those 5 volts when I switch it off?

  • Horrible smell beneath the kitchen sink?

I just rented an apratment in San Francisco. This is a horrible smell in the cabinets beneath the kitchen sink. It may be the garbage disposal or something behind the wall. The management company hired a plumber who said the smell was due to some areas near the pipes that needed to be patched. That didn't fix it, but the plumber claims he could no longer smell the odor. The mgmt company then sent a contractor and a third guy, both smell the odor. I think it may be coming from the garbage disposal, but they are unsure. One guy said it is likely that something died behind the wall and to remove it they would need to remove the sink, tear out the wall, remove the offenseive smell, then replace everything. The last guy also said that instead of doing all that work, "the smell should disspiate eventually."

Sounds like some BS. to me. Not my problem if they have to spend money to fix it, I can't be living with a smell. So my questions:

    1. How long is reasonable to wait for the smell to dissipate? (Before I call back and complain some more)

    2. What should their next step be? (Replace the disposal?, etc?)

    3. When they fail to rectify it, what is my next step for recourse? (I don't want to be pessimistic, but they don't really sound concerned about the smell, only the money right now.)

    Thanks!

  • Generating stock loss?

I read the article below about how to generate a tax loss while avoiding wash sales. Part of the strategy is to buy more shores, wait 31 days, then sell. To protect against downside on the new shares before you sell, they say to sell Calls and buy Puts. My question is: why sell calls? Doesn't the purchase of the Puts provide the protection? Article is (it's short):

  • How to correct stock cost basis with broker?

Backin 2007 I transferred my stock account from one brokerage to another. I noticed that all the costs were wrong with the new brokerage. They transferred number of shares but not cost, so all my costs were listed as 0. So if stock I held had a price of $10/share, my new brokerage was showing a profit of $10/share (price- cost, cost being $0 since it did not transfer over)

Fast forward to 2011. New IRS rules require my broker to report cost basis of anything I sell in 2011 going forward. So how do I get my broker to report the correct cost basis?

  • What to do about cyber stalker?

I am being harassed by someone via my phone. I am female and he is male and we met on a major dating website. Unfortunately I gave him my cell number and after we communicated a few times I told him I was no longer interested. Yet he still texts me and it freaks me out. They are not threatening but I have told him to stop and he will not. He sometimes texts me in the middle of the night and wakes me up. It is just very creepy.

I would not like to involve the police. A couple months ago I threatened to call the police and he stopped, but then he just started up again. What should I do?

  • Can my landlord dictate rules on visitors? (San Francisco)?

Here's the sitch: I live in a flat with 4 bedrooms, each rented out individually. In San Francisco. Roomies all get along. One guy has his girlfriend sleep over once or twice a week. None of us have a problem with it. Landlord came by one time and saw her and said something to one of us (not the guy who is the boyfriend) about "no overnight guests."

Is it in the landlord's power to dictate no overnight guests? Even if it is in the rental agreement, is it enforceable? I would think not, but I need a reference or something I can look up. I mentioned that I live in San Francisco because I know there are a bunch of tenant rights here that may not exist in other places. Thanks!

  • Shaving irritation...what is causing it?

I have always used cheap, disposable Gillette razors. Never had any problem, but I thought I could get a closer shave with a better razor. I went to a shop and they sold me a bunch of fancy stuff, razor, cream, pre-shave oil, after shave cream, etc. I wasn't convinced so they offered to give me a free shave by a professional. Smoothest, closest shave I ever had.

The next day, I got a huge patch of bumps and irritation on my cheek. Does anyone know what might have caused it? Was it the shave being too close (razor?) The shaving cream? One of the oild she put on (there were two, one was after shave, one was something else, can't remember). She also used a hot towel on my face.

I am asking because I would like to use a beter razor and get a closer shave, but don't want the bumps/irritation. If it was the after shave and oils she used that caused it, I can still get a razor and just not use the oils. Any insights? Thanks!

  • Car in storage, what do I need to do?

I am going to put my car in storage for several months. What should I do to prepare? Once in high school I got grounded and my dad put my car in the garage for 3 months. At the end, it would not start, the battery had drained. What do I do to prevent this? Anything else I need to do besides that?
