Vegans: what was the hardest food to give up when you transitioned to veganism?

I want to become vegan. I'm only vegetarian for now and have been for almost 3 years, and every 3-4 months I go on a raw vegan cleanse for around a month. For the entire time I've been vegetarian I have not consumed milk - I hate the taste, I know the harm it does, and almond milk is too amazing. I already don't consume a lot of cheese, and I love daiya, so I'd have no problem just using that on whatever. Additionally, I'm not sure of "hidden" non-vegan ingredients, or where they're found, so that kind of holds be back from going full on vegan.

ANYWAYS. The hardest thing in the world which is keeping me back from going vegan is...*drumroll*...greek yogurt! Ah.. anyone know of any similar replacements? And what is the best egg substitute? Every Saturday morning I have egg whites with veggies and fresh juice for breakfast... so a good substitute would be nice!

Thanks all. :)

Update:

Hehe the hardest thing for me to give up when going vegetarian was salmon. *sniff sniff* ;)

@Suru - I love ice cream too. Try ice cream made with almond milk or coconut milk! Stuff is delish.

I actually missed my eggs on toast. But I didn't really crave for it like I used to. After you've been on the vegan diet for a week or so, you will notice you don't really crave for unhealthy food like you used to. My favourite 'food' used to be chocolate. I once tried a vegan chocolate bar (which was actually delicious!) but I didn't even finish it and gave the last half to my aunty. I just realized I didn't need it in my body and didn't feel the need to eat it. The first few days going Vegan may be difficult (wasn't for me) but it just gets easier the further you go. If you're worried about 'hidden' non-Vegan foods, then just consume mainly whole foods. That is what you're supposed to be consuming anyway to get all the goodness your body needs. The only packaged food I consume every once and a while are my vegan primal strips (like a vegan beef jerky) and peanut butter. Apart from that, I generally consume lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, beans, lentils, nuts, oatmeal etc. No need to check labels if you're consuming fresh produce!

http://vegweb.com/recipes This site has a lot on food replacements (egg, milk, meat, etc), hidden animal products as well as a ton of recipes. You should check it out, it is a great site.

I plan on going vegan, but I am not one yet. The hardest thing for me to give up before becoming vegetarian was fried chicken and ice cream. Everything else-- milk, cheese, eggs and all that was easy. I STILL eat cheese and ice cream on the very rare occasion. Aside that it was pretty easy.

    Good luck!

  • I really miss good caramel. I've had vegan caramels and vegan caramel sauce, but most companies put milk in the caramel. grrr.

And while I was never a cheese fan, I miss the texture of cheese on pizza. The vegan cheeses just don't do it, so I eat cheeseless pizza now.

Before i went vegan, I would eat these meringue cookies, and I just adored them.

It's not that they were hard to give up, it's that I sometimes miss them.

If you're looking for a sub for the egg whites and veggies, though, why not try scrambled tofu? There are tons of recipes online.

If Princess Luna were to upgrade to vegan, dairy and eggs would always be present, foiling any attempts to adhere to our new diet. That is why we do not anticipate progressing beyond the laco-ovo level of vegetarianism.
