Jehovah's Witnesses accuse Christians of substituting God's name?

It is unarguable that the ancient Hebrew scriptures contained the Divine Name (YHWH) nearly 6,000 times. Even when, after the captivity in Babylon ended, the scriptures were translated into Greek (the Septuagint version) a few copies, like Aquila's of the 3rd century, retained the Hebrew consonants. But most substituted it with the Greek word for Lord, Kyrios. As Aquila's version was not there in the time of Jesus and the apostles, they would have used Septuagint manuscripts that had Kyrios. So when Jesus read from the scroll of Isaiah, to apply the prophecy in 61:1 to himself, he would not have pronounced the Tetragrammaton. He would have said, "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord...."

When the Christian Greek scriptures began to be written, most of the Old Testament quotations were taken from the Septuagint. And not once, in all of the Christian Greek scriptures, did the writers pen the Tetragrammaton. It was never in the New Testament, so it is a fallacy for JWs to claim that they have 'restored' it there. They can only claim to have done that in the Old Testament.

But because OT references to Jehovah are applied to Jesus in the NT, the JW translation has played fast and loose with the way it inserts 'Jehovah' in the NT. It only ever does that when it clearly isn't Jesus; but whenever YHWH is applied to Jesus, lo and behold, they put 'Lord'! It's too obvious for words what their game is! Well, obvious to all except the JWs.

A spectacular example JWs need to waken up to is how Joel 2:28 is quoted in Acts 2:21. The NWT is justified in translating 'Lord' as 'Jehovah' in Acts 2:21 (even though the Greek manuscript they were working from used the Septuagint 'Kyrios'). There is no question but that Joel had written YHWH. No problem, then. Or is there? Because a few verses on, Peter applies that prophecy to calling on the name of Jesus for salvation! The name of Yahweh becomes the name of Jesus as far as salvation is concerned! (verse 38 & 4:12)

How many times does your bible have the tetregrammaton? Be honest. So why use titles such as LORD and GOD instead of YHWH? Why use any name in the bible that start with J when the letter shoul be Y as in the name JESUS which origanally should be pronounced Yeshua or Yehoshua?

Again be honest!

If you want to get technical why change the bible to English? Keep it in Hebrew And Greek. You CLAIM TO BE HONEST?

The King James version 1611 edition uses JEHOVAH 4 times

The revised King James took out the name JEHOVAH

The 21st century restored the name back in those 4 places

The latest King James now uses JEHOVAH throughout the OT

The American standard before it was revised uses JEHOVAH throught the O.T

When they revised it the American standard they took out name JEHOVAH.

The NIV which came after the King James and American Standard doesn't use the name JEHOVAH at all but substituted the YHWH for LORD an GOD for what reason? Be honest. Need I say more?

YOU SAY ORIGINAL WELL THE ORIGINAL WAS YHWH. NOT LORD OR GOD.

'Jehovah' is the anglicized version 'YHWH', the same way Jesus is the anglicized version of the greek translation of the hebrew name 'Yeshua', which is directly translated to 'Joshua'.

It's been argued that other bibles use the word LORD in place of YHWH after adopting the superstition that YHWH should not be uttered, and later to encourage the notion that Jesus and Jehovah are the same individual, thus supporting trinitarian doctrines.

Whether or not the name was added inappropriately to the New Testament is a debate among scholars. It's reasonable to conclude that where the New Testament quotes the Old Testament, the name should occur.

How would you feel if all of a sudden you went to every bookstore and every Bible had REMOVED the name of Jesus and substituted Lord or Messiah?

Would it lose some of its forcefulness, its "personality", even perhaps its meaning?

Would you feel a little "detached" from the translation, and try to find one that actually used the name of Jesus?

And if you could not find even ONE, might it make sense to have one printed that did put Jesus' name everywhere it was OBVIOUS that it should be?

Particularly if you located old manuscripts that contained the name of Jesus in Greek and it was verified where the name was in the original writings? And that the manuscripts were available for ANYONE of ANY RELIGION to look at and see for themselves where the name was originally?

Not knowing whether you a male or female- l would venture to say if you were Sally and suddenly be " HER" or if you were Dan and suddenly you became " HIM". that would be disrespectful. People have names.

Saying God or Lord is not a NAME. Why is it that the name JEHOVAH was in the King James Version bibles for Decades... but try finding that name in any of the newer JKV bibles- its not there. Whose brilliant idea was it to replace that name- some committee who felt threatened by that's name association with Jehovah's Witnesses?- you truly reaching with that one.

The divine name, Jehovah, was of utmost importance to Jesus. This beloved Son wanted others to know and use his Father’s name. Jesus’ own name means “Jehovah is Salvation.” On the night before his death, Jesus could say in prayer to Jehovah: “I have made your name known.” (John 17:26) It is not surprising that Jesus used God’s name and made it known to others. After all, how could Jesus’ listeners understand the truth about Jehovah without even knowing His name and what it stands for?

By the way- the Name Jehovah was not INVENTED by the witnesses.

What you refer to is actually one of the few selling points that the Jw religion hammers. You will often hear this one come out and it must be in almost every publication they have ever printed. Oh well....! I suppose they have to believe that there has been something good, like an achievement that has come out of their religion. Personally, I think the Bible has been corrupted many times throughout history and especially the book of Revelation. As far as omission of "God's name" goes, believe me, in the scheme of things, that is absolutely no issue at all.............

The YHWH - Hebrew Tetragrammaton was in the original languages of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek scriptures some 7000 times so it has been fully restored in the New World Translation.

Note please the newest King James Version of the bible, in Psalms 83:18 the name was removed yet in older versions it was there... So you can plainly see that the name has been obliterated from all scripture by the King James Version, which is so common today... And think of this, note please even the name is King James "VERSION"................

Our bible is strictly translated NOT revised for our own purposes, it is restored to original wording in the English translation, as closely as possible, while ease of understanding if a factor. Similar to many volumes written today for better understanding in today's form of speech. No Ye, and Thou to confuse.

Jehovah's Witnesses give All attention is to Legalism, word usage, and translation viability. Their NWT is a perversion of the original Greek and Hebrew, yet without looking at all opinions regarding the quality of their NWT, they make grandiose claims that are out and out "fabrications".

The tetragramaton did not occur 237 times in the New Testament, as presented by their NWTranslation, and many other scriptures have been added, subtracted, and changed to accommodate a failing religious order.

The "restoration of the name "Jehovah" is a restoration from a 13th century monk...so they are merely restoring a Catholic interpretation of someone's idea of what the great Name is.

This is called "A sham".

Actually, Jehovah is a transliteration of the Hebrew YHWH. So no it is not a substitution, it is actually a translation of the actual name.

To substitute a personal name as Jehovah for general titles such as LORD and GOD is substitution, and is dishonest.

Nothing is set in stone about the pronunciation and we at least make an attempt to use it. If you ever refer to Adonijah or Elijah the "jah" part comes from Jehovah and you probably have no problem using it. You most likely call Jesus, Jesus.
