Can I use varnish or laquer to preserve a flower?

I want to put my fresh flower onto a little piece of wood and put a varnish or laquer over it to preserve it, but I don't know if this will still allow air to get in and rot the flower. I would rather not use resin if that is at all possible.

Update:

Would Varathane work?

putting varnish on a plant while the plant contains still moisture isn't going to work, if you want to preserve a flower you will first have to get rid of the water in it.

Commonly this is done by pressing a flower between absorbent paper and placing a heavy weight (e.g. stack of books) on them for at least a few days.

After the flower is dry you an put it onto wood and use some spray varnish on it to stabilize the flower so it doesn't crumble quite as easily.
