Why does my dog pet cats?

The first time he met my cat, he put his paw on her head. I read that tapping means he wants to play. After a while, he started to try to stroke her back with his front paw. She didn't like it.

He met another kitten the other day and he tried to stroke the kitten's back with his paw too. Why does he do this? I'm not worried, just curious.

Lucky he didn't get a scratched nose. He hasn't figured out that cats are not dogs. He thinks she's a dog. You are right it is an introduction to play.
