what would cause my engine to bounce through the rev range?

I have an auto mazda 323; 1.6 l ZM-DE engine.

It usually gets coddled but once and a while I like to open it up just to clear out the cobwebs.

Last nigh I had real trouble getting it through the rev range.

It seemed to bounce around the taco between 4500 and 6000 rpm. The car would jerk and lurch corresponding with the engine speed.

It did accelerate and I could get it to the 7000 red line, it just had this really unusual behaviour between 4.5 and 6k.

Any ideas what could cause this problem?

you have a bad crank sensor or wiring

You may need new spark plugs, wires, distributor cap & rotor, that sort of thing. If it's not that, then I don't know, but I would start with those, they are the cheapest things to replace and it's best to start with the simple and move on the the hard later if that doesn't work.

How does it idle? Clean, choppy, up and down in RPM? I could be a bad sensor or vacuum leak. No check engine light?
