  • what type of statistical test should I use to analyse a single variable over successive years?

I want to analyse the number of hospital admissions for a number of years prior to and following a given event to see if that event had an impact.

I would also like to control for age of admission if you could give me some insight as to how I would go about doing that.

  • can a power surge fry my mobo without effecting my PSU?

My mobo isnt recognizing any of the hard drives attached and so boots into a black screen with an error message.

I've tried connecting 2 different keyboards into multiple usb ports but neither of them register or even get power to illuminate keyboard lights, ie. I'm unable to access the bios. my optical mouse however gets power.

I know my psu is providing power to my HDs cause I can hear them spooling up.

My question: is it possible that the electrical storm that passed over my house yesterday fried my mobo specifically damaging my sata ports and the keyboard controller without effecting my PSU or any other devices in my house?

    my rig:

    CPU: i5 750

    MB: gigabyte p55

HD: sandisk SSD and 3x caviar greens

    psu: coolermaster GX bronze 550w

keyboards: CM mech and a dell cheapie

    mouse: CM inferno

  • is it common to disconnect the odometer on a dirt bike?

I'm looking at buying my first road registrable dirt bike and am shocked at the fact that most on the used market have incredibly low ks. I just dont understand why someone would pay rego on a bike for 6 years if they're only every going to put 5000ks on it. My question is, is it common to disconnect the odometer when off road to maintain the resale value of the bike. I just find it very difficult to believe that there are that many unconscionable operators out there.

  • guitar sound: 500K vs 250K pots?

there seems to be alot of talk about the sound differences between 500k and 250k pots out there. I'm led to believe that fender typically use 250K volume pots on their single coils which give a darker sound, while conversely a 500k with a bucker is brighter.

my questions is isnt the resistance on these two pots the same when the volume is wide open (zero ohms)?

so how could there be any difference in the sound? how can the 250k pot "bleed more of the higher frequencies to ground"?

  • what is the purpose of the ground and the capacitor in this circuit?

I'm planning on rewiring my guitar and would like to work out the circuitry before I try.

the link is to an image I knocked up of a simplified guitar circuit. the amp and speaker on the right are external to the guitar and not shown in proper detail (electronics isnt my field).

the AC power source is actually a pickup (similar to a microphone) it outputs many different frequencies.

    I would like to know

    A. why is the circuit grounded?

    B. what is the purpose of the capacitor/ variable resistor that runs across the AC source?

I've been scouring guitar forums but there seems to be so much misinformation out there. It seems people who are probably brilliant musicians just don't get the basics of electronics.

  • what would cause my engine to bounce through the rev range?

    I have an auto mazda 323; 1.6 l ZM-DE engine.

It usually gets coddled but once and a while I like to open it up just to clear out the cobwebs.

Last nigh I had real trouble getting it through the rev range.

It seemed to bounce around the taco between 4500 and 6000 rpm. The car would jerk and lurch corresponding with the engine speed.

It did accelerate and I could get it to the 7000 red line, it just had this really unusual behaviour between 4.5 and 6k.

Any ideas what could cause this problem?

  • why is a p value of 10^-7 given as less than 0.05?

I just searched my protein mass spec data againts the mascot data base.

to determine significants mascot says that a score of 70 has a p<0.05

it also gives the formula of

score= -10 log (P) , where P is the probability that the observed match is a random event.

From my understanding, that would mean that 70 corresponds to p=10^-7 which would mean that p<0.001.

any idea why they didnt express it as p<0.001 ?

  • effect of termination of the EU on the Australian economy?

the ASX is getting knocked around pretty hard at the moment because it's likely Greece will leave the EU.

I understand how international instability is bad for confidence, but it seems to me that in the long run a dissolution of the EU will be better for Australia. There will less pressure for European countries to trade with each other increasing Australian exports.

is this a naive position? are there stronger factors (then fear) that I'm not considering?

  • Romeo and Juliet, why the religious symbolism?

In Romeo and Juliet, the seen where they first meet is very heavy with Christian references.

He refers to himself as a pilgrim, talks of idolatry and compares the palms of his hands to the palms burnt on ash Wednesday.

Why do you think that pivotal moment in the story Shakespeare chose religion to associate with love?

ps this has nothing to do with school work, It's just something I'm curious about.

  • good honours projects for a potential surgeon?

I'm finishing up my undergrad degree in genetics and molecular biology and am looking at research projects for next year, should I not get into medicine.

my long term goal is to become a general surgeon and from what I can find on the Royal College of Surgeons web site they like students to have a back ground in research.

I've done 2 research projects already and found out that I can find interest in most areas of science. Can anyone recommend an area of study or the types of techniques that would best assist me in gaining a place in a surgical program?

  • would patients suffering frontal lobe disinhibition portray different personalities?

if you were to take a group of people suffering from a Phineas Gage type accident, would you expect their personalties to differ by as much as it did prior to the accident?

I guess what i'm asking is, do you think that fundamentally most peoples personalties are indistinguishably similar and it's the traits that we inhibit that set us apart?

  • powercolor 6950 2gb or 1?

I'm looking to upgrade my gtx275 to play BF3. I only have 1 monitor with DVI (no HDMI). I'm considering getting a smaller second monitor to run team speak and browse the internet during map changes but this will probably never eventuate.

I have found a powercolor 6950 1gb for $249, or the 2gb for $285 but from what i've read there is no benifits to the extra gig with only one monitor.

any recommendations on powercolor, alternate models or 2gb over 1?

    cheers

  • Should I buy 2 video cards to SLI?

I'm looking into completing a mid level build and am curious about cost to benefit of a high end video card as opposed to two cheaper ones.

for example how would a nvidia GTX560 compare against two GT440?

I guess if I go with the single more expensive gpu then I can always add another at a later point in time, is there any other benefits/drawbacks that I'm missing?

  • why are high bounce balls so bouncy?

Spalding high bounce balls are soft (easily deformed) compared to solid rubber bouncy balls or high pressure rubber balls (eg, basket ball).

Why are high bounce balls so bouncy despite the fact that kinetic energy from the drop is wasted in deforming the ball (by generating heat in the rubber and moving the air around it)?

  • problem with sigma bc1609 wired?

I just bought a sigma bc1609 wired cycling computer and have noticed a possible fault.

after I inserted the battery it simply wont automatically turn off. I haven't yet attached it to the bracket and it is still sitting on my desk with the power on.

I thought that these computers were meant to automatically shut off when not in use to conserve the battery.

I'm reluctant to install it as that would require me to open the speed sensor/bracket mount which may complicate a return.

does any one else use this same computer?
