is it common to disconnect the odometer on a dirt bike?
I'm looking at buying my first road registrable dirt bike and am shocked at the fact that most on the used market have incredibly low ks. I just dont understand why someone would pay rego on a bike for 6 years if they're only every going to put 5000ks on it. My question is, is it common to disconnect the odometer when off road to maintain the resale value of the bike. I just find it very difficult to believe that there are that many unconscionable operators out there.

Pretty common practice, guess they figure a bike is worth more with fewer miles when in reality it's maintenance that really counts. "Yeah, mate, I know the bike looks like pile of sh!t and runs worse but it only has 45 miles on the odo".

Dirt bikes in the US currently do not have odometers, they have hours of use meters.
Dual purpose bikes often have low low mileage, seems like 2/3 of the ppl who buy them weren't as interested in riding after all, and it spends most of its life in the garage.
Ive bought several of them. I often wonder who ended up losing money on a bike ridden 3k miles over 10 years.

No, street legal dirt bikes never have high miles. My 1976 XL350 honda has 8000 on it. My 2004 street bike has 50,000 and something
