Can anyone tell me, would a photographer have an agent?

It's for a story. One of the characters is a photographer, successful enough to make a reasonable living at it. A second character needs to to know pretty much everything about (and have a degree of control over) the photographer's professional life but not be his partner so I was wondering: would a good pro photographer have an agent? He's already got a booker, but it needs to be someone who can travel.

Bit of an odd question, I know, but thanks to everyone who answers!

The agent doesn't really travel with or have control over a photographer's business - the agent is more like a booker - gets work and places photos for the shooter.

An assistant would fit the character - this person does the books, schedules travel, keeps track of assets (photos), interacts with the agent (contracts and such), often assists in shoots and travels with the photog, taking responsibility for everything from moving equipment to packing underwear.

Well you could have the "hand up the ****" type art director, which is common for many magazine and commercial shoots. They tend to be employed by the client to oversee the general direction of the various shoots for a company or magazine, and it's not unheard of that the director and the photographer have somewhat differing creative visions, with the outcome quite predictable.

As people have already mentioned, the assistant is also a common role in photography. A senior assistant would generally prep the gear, and work closely with the photographer, and it's also not uncommon to have a junior who is essentially a general dogsbody and answers the phone etc, which probably fills the role of "booker" a little better.
