How do you add 3" to the back splash?

I want to add about 3" of tile to the side of the back splash, not on top. The existing tile has 1/2" cement board behind it, so I will need to add something similar in size to keep the same line. However, there doesn't appear to be any studs to attach the cement board to behind the drywall in this area. How to secure the board to the wall, & the existing cement board behind the tile.

You can use construction adhesive, tile mastic or thin set to bond the cement board to the dry wall.

Let it set up over nite before tiling.

Use plenty but not to thick to make the board stick out further than the other board and try to get full coverage.
