Where are the cheapest neighborhoods in Vancouver, BC.?

I am moving to Vancouver, BC next year from Seattle to go to University of British Columbia. I am planning to start visiting in September to get a better feel for the city and I want to start looking at apartments. I know Vancouver can be an expensive city to live in but I am curious if anyone knows of any relatively inexpensive cat friendly apartment complexes or even just a decent area to start looking. I do want it to be within a reasonable transit distance from UBC though. Any ideas?

There really are no 'cheapest' neighbourhoods in Vancouver(except the DTES(DownTownEastSide).

But, that is an area that you should avoid at any cost.

Burnaby, New Westminster and Richmond are all cheaper than Vancouver.

Google 'apartment rentals in Vancouver BC', and choose from the plethora of URLs you will get.

Try renting a basement suite close to a Skytrain station. Those are relatively cheap.

Try hunting for a place to rent in East Van.

I suppose you could pitch a tent!
