My Methodist family goes to eat potato salad while my nephews run to a Baton Rouge liquor store for Abita Beer and Magnolia Pecan Ale.
In my boyhood neighborhood of New Orleans, brass bands would start blasting happy music.

For a burial, the funeral usually ends with either the officiant (if religious) or funeral director (if not) informing the family that the casket will be lowered shortly, giving them an opportunity to say a final goodbye and to leave the area if they would rather not see that. Example: "Ladies and gentlemen, the casket will be lowered shortly. If you would like to, you can come up and say goodbye or you are welcome to stay for the lowering."
For a cremation, after the viewing, the officiant or director informs the mourners that the deceased will be going to the crematorium shortly, giving an opportunity to say a final goodbye. Example: Ladies and gentlemen, we will transporting [name of deceased] shortly. If you would like, please come up and say goodbye."
After either one, the mourners usually (in the US anyway) have a post-funeral gathering with food and drinks to get some support from each other.

We listened to a song my father chose to have played. Then we all went back to my uncle's house and ate food and got drunk, talked and talked and talked.
