Boxing Fans: What do you think of the movie On the Waterfront?

Just as a break from the Khan/Garcia questions!

Not really a boxing movie as such but stars Marlon Brando as an ex boxer and includes in the cast ex heavyweight contenders Tony Galento, Abe Simon and Tami Mauriello, it also features the line "I coulda been a contender" which is now an immortal boxing line.

I think this movie is a classic, what's your opinion?

Update:

@Stone: Galento's got a book?! What is it called? I'll definitely buy that one!

Update 2:

@Celticbrawler: Long time no see friend, how's it going? Joe and Max was a good movie, as for musicals I was put off of them after Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, movie was way too violent. That scene where Dick Van Dyke goes crazy with a bazooka gave me nightmares for weeks.

Update 3:

@Celticbrawler: I'm doing ok thanks. Hope things get better for you, life can be a bumpy road at times but there is good in life as well, even though it doesn't always seem that way.

Well for one it includes the greatest, most diverse and powerful actor that God ever graced us with....Brando? Are you kidding? Tony Galento of course!

I always lol at Galento's line when they throw the snitch off the roof: "The canary sang but he couldn't fly!" Haha!

Yeah it's a classic. Personally I think Brando is a tad overrated but still a great actor, he plays it great, and no one can go crazy like Brando can.

    10/10 from me, absolute classic

BTW I've ordered Galento's book, hopefully it's a good read, from what I've read on the guy it should be real entertaining haha.

Edit: It's called 'Two Ton: One Fight, One Night.'

On the Waterfront ? - Yep, one of the all time great surfing movies.

Been a looong time since I watched it, great flick. Tami Mauriello was in it? So much for me reading the credits huh? Abe Simon, What a thick dude he was. Except for the timing, painted him green and no one could have fit the part of playing 'The Hulk' better.

Have you seen 'Triumph of the Spirit' ? (1989 - Willem Dafoe) The true story of Salamo Arouch. Who was forced to fight hundreds of no weight class fights in a Nazi prison camp. Good movie and story.

I like the classics and 'Gentleman Jim' (Errol Flynn) i thought was pretty good as well. Was the movie that started my intrest into boxing. And no, i'm not even close to that old.

'Joe and Max' was a good movie as well. And 'Rocky Marciano' (1999) was pretty good also.

So there is a Galento Bio ? That should prove to be a very interesting read

Well Hairydude, I thought you would have also mentioned 'Kid Galahad' staring Elvis Presley. Dont you hippies favor the muscials?

Lol - Been bit of a bumpy road lately, but hoping it smoothes out soon. Hope your doing well lad.

    Thanks Amigo

This is a classic movie, that exposed the gangs that controlled labor on the water front docks.

Boxing did not really factor into the movie, but was a plot sideline to explain how the mob controlled everything, including boxing.

By any measure, it's a 4 star movie (out of 4 stars).

"I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it. It was you, Charley."
