Husky Won't Sleep at Night?

My boyfriend has a husky that's about 6 months old. Recently, she's started making it impossible for either one of them to sleep at night. She sleeps in a kennel and all night long she howls and whines. He's gone two days without sleep and has only gotten about three hours every night for the last month because of this. Because he works, she's in her kennel for a long time, which I know can cause dogs to have difficulty sleeping at night, but when he gets off work, the husky and his other dog can run around all they want and he takes them on frequent walks, so she's still burning a lot of energy. Does anyone know what we can do to get her to sleep at night. He's in an apartment so if this doesn't stop, eventually one of his neighbors is going to complain.

I am a very experienced husky companion giving you advice from the standpoint of 20+ years with many huskies.

If by "kennel" you mean "crate", the plastic or wire boxes that the dogs can stand and turn in only, this is absolutely not appropriate for a husky. If you mean a 4' x 8' kennel, that is probably also not appropriate for a husky.

The husky breed is a working breed and the original breed, which is still genetically present in this dog, was bred to run for HOURS and HOURS every day. I mean RUN, not walk, and to pull stuff. They have lots and lots of energy. They are very very very very very active dogs who need to burn enormous amounts of energy every day, and being in a crate is absolute torture for them.

Huskies are not suited to apartment life, NO MATTER WHAT SORT OF WALKS YOU TAKE THEM ON. They need large, securely fenced yards and HOURS and HOURS - I mean like 5-10 hours of hard physical exersize every day. I have 1/2 acre inside a 6 foot fence for my dogs and they can race around all day with each other and for one of them even that wasn't enough - she would climb or dig the fence and roam the neighborhood in spite of my very best efforts to secure her.

I suggest you rehome this dog immediately. Unless you move to somewhere with a large fenced yard, keeping this animal is cruel to the animal and will be a real hardship for you. There are LOTS of huskies who are in rehoming situations because of their special energy and exersize needs and there are lots of rescue organziations that help them. Find one. Get the dog somewhere where her needs can be met properly.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news, but in a crate/kennel/apartment situation I can tell you for a fact the dog will be very unhappy. And at 6 months old, she's just beginning her adolescent phase that will last to 18 months - it's going to get MUCH worse, rehome the dog NOW.

Don't keep her in a crate or kennel, she hates being locked up and seeing the outside of her kennel. I have one 7-8weeks old and she goes crazy loud when I did that. What helps is that you cover her kennel with a blanket to prevent her from seeing the outside and leave the kennel door open. She has to see a human or another companion be in her reach. It's so adorable but annoying sometimes. Exercise her for like 1-2 hours before bed time. Run her across your apartment or outside . Just play with her. Make sure it's hard physical work for her like running and jumping. She''ll calm down. Sometimes she might wake up later, but again, exercise her you get a work out too.

The first thing I would do would be to remove her from the kennel. I would buy a pet bed and let her sleep there so she can stretch out or curl up or whatever she wants to do. She probably hates the kennel and I think she is trying to tell you that by crying all night. My dog sleeps with me and sleeps soundly all night. I believe a dog should be free. A lot of people would disagree with me because they believe in kennels but, I don't. Try leaving her out with a doggie bed. You can get a nice one at Walmart for $17.00. If it works, keep her out of the kennel. If it doesn't work, put her back in. I feel like kennels are like a doggie jail. I know already that people are going to disagree but, this section is actually designed for us to give our best opinion and mine is to let her be free at night. She obviously hates the kennel.

    I hope this helps

The dog obviously hates the kennel and keeping her locked up all day and all night is making it worse. Sounds like the dog spends more time in a kennel than out, if that is the case make a room for the dog or get rid of it. Would you want to spend your life locked in a cage and let out for a few hours every night? Kinda sounds like prison.

Dogs can get very antsy very quickly if they are not exercised properly. Even if the husky has another dog to play with, as long as they're still indoors, they feel trapped (like a fish in a fishbowl). Frequent walks are a necessity, but especially since your dog is a husky, she needs a lot of exercise. Maybe take her on runs or to the dog park. If she's tired out and not too mentally and physically excited, she can't help but sleep.
