What's a way I can fund raise money for a wheelchair van?

I am 15 and I have a rare genetic disease called muscular dystrophy. It continually makes the muscles in different areas in my body weaker. I have used a power chair 24/7 since the 3rd grade. The only times I haven't been able to use my power chair is when I am not at home or school, because I don't have a wheelchair van to take me places. (You can't fit a power chair inside of a car/SUV.)

It's continually getting more and more uncomfortable for me to sit in my manual chair, and I'm dreading going places because of it. I also hate sitting in the house all day, but I'd rather be comfortable and bored than mad that I can't push myself where I want to go, and that I'm uncomfortable.

What are ways I could fund raise for a wheelchair accessible vehicle? Stores? Churches? How do I get people to sponsor my cause?

Yeah, most people have no idea how big and HEAVY a power chair is, or understand that you need a power chair and not a manual. You could try asking merchants if you could put a donation jar on their counter with your picture on it and an explanation of what you're trying to do. It would take a lot of jars and several months probably, but you might be able to afford a used full sized van. You can also try getting merchants to donate prizes for a raffle. If you know a lot of people, a raffle can work well.

    Good luck!

Have you thought about calling or writing to the Muscular Dystrophy Association? Not sure if you are from the United States. Each year the MDA has a telethon to raise money for their cause. They might be able to help you find the resources you need to be more independant.

Call all of the tv stations in your area and ask them to help by setting up a fund for your. They will ask viewers to donate money into that account so you will get a van. You probably have to be 16 to get a drivers liscense and lessons to learn to drive but maybe they can help arrange that for you too.

Source(s): If you have a case worker from Medicaid or your insurance company see if you have transportation benefits for the time being. Some cities have special needs bus passes that are free if a doctor writes the order and then they can lift you up in the van or send a speical taxi to take you places.

Is it Chrysler that has a program to help pay for these to be altered? Also, many of the conversion companies can help you find a used van with a conversion van already installed.
