Before him there were very popular actors like Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar. But Superstar word was coined for Rajesh Khanna, that's why media is saying that he was first superstar of India. Literally it is true but practically not.

Yes the tagline of "Superstar" started with Rajesh Khanna. The performance in the movie "Anand" made him more popular that he became the superstar of Bollywood. Amitabh Bachchan was given tutorial in acting by him..

Yes he was. The word "superstar" itself started with him. At the peak of his career Rajesh Khanna would be mobbed during public appearances as fans kissed his car, which would be covered with lipstick marks. They lined the road, cheering and chanting his name. Female fans sent him letters written in blood. The hysteria connected with Khanna was unprecedented.
