In the movie "Hide and Seek," why was the neighbor holding the dead butterfly?

I know that "Charlie" (the dad) killed it, but why did they show the neighbor holding it?

The butterfly may have been symbolic of the Dad's metamorphosis from a loving father to a deranged psycho cable of killing people. As Charlie, the father killed his wife, the local sheriff, and his girlfriend. Then he attacks Katherine and threatens Emily. The neighbor was maybe aware of this transformation. The neighbor, during a confrontation with the father, demands “I want to see her!” referring to Emily. He was concerned for Emily's safety.
