Okay for all you math experts out there, I have this question on my job application that reads : If the sales tax in NY state is 8% and the customer's items total is $ 54.08, what is the grand total of the sale, including the tax? Please help me! :) I'm not very good at math, as you can see..

Answer is $ 58.41
First Step:
54.08 * 0.08
(total) * (sales tax, percent in decimal)
== $4.33 (4.3264) (tax)
Second Step:
54.08 + 4.33
(total) + (tax)
== $ 58.41
(Total with tax)

54.08 multiplied by .08, aka 8%. Add the amount to 54.08!

convert 8% to a decimal which becomes 0.08 then multiply 54.08 by 0.08 and then add 54.08 to it:
0.08*54.08+54.08= 58.4
