Can foreign children attend public school in India?

My husband's company has offered him an opportunity to work in India. They just suggested it today, so I am not sure of all the details. I am trying to learn what I can about living in India, so that I will be able to make a good decision about whether we should move our family there. We have three children, ages 14 yrs, 12 yrs and 5 weeks. Will it be possible for my children to attend Indian public schools? I do not want to pay tens of thousands of dollars a year for them to attend a special school for foreigners. I do not want to spend that kind of money, and I would want my children to experience the real India.

An answer to this question and any advice about relocating a family to India from the United States would be great :).

Update:

I would consider it a benefit for my children to learn a new language through being immersed in an Indian public school.

unless u specify the city where u r going to locate its impossible for anyone to recommend a good school. but there are very good schools of international standards in almost every city, so education may not be a problem.

but , yes indian students are academically ahead of their western counterparts, so it may be a good idea to start one class less, and then catch up in the middle of the year if required. Most schools do allow this.

lastly, do not go through any agents or Touts as we call them here. You can directly talk to the school for your admission , and you may get it if there is any vacancy. Most agents only take u for a ride . A local friend or well wisher would be more helpful.

Public schools in India are free, but they are like urban ghetto schools in USA

The teachers are often absent, and only very poor slum dwellers send their kids there

Find out English medium schools which is attended by middle class to upper middle class

    Preferably Anglo-Indian schools.

The problem is that all Indian schools demand fluency in an Indian language, which your kids dont have

But you can negotiate with the school principal to exempt your kids

Find schools which use CBSE curriculum or ICSE or Cambridge curriculum

Here the medium of teaching is English

Avoid State Board Schools, attended mostly by slum dwellers

Good Indian schools are heavily in demand, and charge donation of $2k per kid for admission and $2k every year as tuition.

Again, some Indian schools may negotiate a lower rate, for the novelty of having white foreign kids attend their schools, which gives them good publicity

There are some schools for foreigners, but very expensive

There are lots of English medium public convent schools in India. They are recognized & funded by government. In my school I have seen foreigners from China, Nepal, Hong Kong & New Zealand. So that proves foreigners can attend public school in India.

Yes, they could, but why on earth would they want to? The language of India is not English, my friend. Your children will be completely alone.
