Food Safety with Acrylic Nails?

Hi! I have acrylic nails and sometimes I use my hands to mix things such as meatloaf or cornbread dressing and other things. I do this because my hands mix better than any spoon can and professional chefs always suggest that your hands are the best mixing tools we have.

While preparing a meatloaf recently my sister mentioned that acrylic nails harbor more bacteria and can cause unsanitary food prep conditions. She wears acrylics too but she wears gloves during food prep. Are acrylic nails really that bad for food prep? My hands are always very clean and I wash under my nails before handling food. I don't want to wear gloves because I'm afraid the food will get a bad taste from the glove material.

Removing my nails is not an option. What should I do other than just making sure my hands are super clean? No one has ever gotten sick off my cooking by the way.

If you thoroughly wash your hands that shouldn't be a problem. Acrylic nails do build up more bacteria, and if you were a professional cook you wouldn't be allowed to have them on. There's a bigger possibility of contaminating food, but just make sure to wash under your nails. And wearing gloves wouldnt ruin the taste of food. Almost everything you've eaten at restaurants have been touched by gloves.

Your sister would not wash her arms with sizzling water and soap? And use a nail brush to get the entire crud out from under her nails? NO! The meals will not get any form of taste or flavor from the plastic or rubber gloves, notably the disposable ones. Meals provider humans have to put on these if they touch any meals so they're deemed safer than surgical scrubbed palms and nails. I have the situation of jabbing holes within the plastic gloves and that does what?? Will get my nails nasty!! I am not concerned in regards to the germs, pathogens, and bacteria that could get within the meatloaf or meatballs before they are cooked in view that I cook dinner them well finished and that kills some thing!!

Those nails can still harbour bacteria no matter how much you clean them, and please don't take this the wrong way, but I find it really off-putting when I see someone with those around any aspect of food, whether it is preparation or serving. You can wear gloves that are made for the food service industry~ they will leave no residual flavor in the food you prep. Another thing, suppose you don't notice one fall off into your food and someone gets it in their mouth? It can easily happen if they are not properly applied. That would be horrible and would seriously make me gag if I ever found it in my food.
