Is it possible to upgrade the processor on a 2006 Mac mini to a intel i5?

The processor on my Mac mini is currently a 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo.

Can I open the mac mini, take out the old processor, and put a i5?

Do I need to take it to a mac store?

If it's possible, am I risking potentially loosing all of my data?

No, No, and No. your info is stored on your harddrive and your processor is welded into your motherboard. You would have to replace the motherboard which is about 6/8 the price of the entire machine and not worth it.
