Always have a one page resume ready, and rewrite it if necessary to address the qualifications cited in the advertisement for the job. Always make sure your contact information is clear and easy to find on your resume. If the place has only a standard application to fill out, ask them to attach your resume to the application when you leave it with them.

Always include a goal at the top of your resume that describes what you want to accomplish in your life, for instance: "I am seeking full time employment to save money to pursue my studies in... (music, acting, science, early childhood ed, or whatever your interest). Employers are impressed by people with ambition. If you don't have much experience, tell them the specific skills you want to learn: "I want a position where I can learn more about (accounting, the music industry, cooking, or whatever), and describe any volunteer work you've done. Get a reference from a former teacher or a neighbor, if you can. Certain words persuade employers, such as 'conscientious, reliable, punctual, friendly, energetic, hard working. Use these words in your description of yourself.

Always look your best when going to a place to apply. The person handing you the application to fill out is part of that company's team, and gets the first look at you. Even if it is a labor or menial job, go business casual, or wear a jacket. You are being interviewed the moment you enter their place of business, by the way you look and the way you talk to the person at the reception desk.

Remember one thing about resumes: the purpose of the resume is to get you the INTERVIEW, not the job. Once you're able to shake hands in the interview, then you can convince them to hire you.
