Are hostels good for 60 year olds?
The wife and I are going to Europe for 6 weeks in Sept. and trying to keep the budget down for accomodation we were wondering about hostels. As we have never stayed at hostels we were wondering if they would fit the bill for two 60 year olds. Private rooms, bathrooms etc. Can any give us any info.

Outside the summer holiday period you will find as many 50+ and under 30's in the hostels.
Private rooms are available but not in all hostels. Bathrooms might be en-suite or down the hall, sometimes en-suite for the dorms and down the hall for private rooms.
Double beds do exist, but are quite rare in hostels, rooms for two mostly have bunk beds, one up-one down. At best they have a double down and a single up or two singles next to each other.
To tell you truth, for the price of the beds, you can often stay as well in a hotel or a bed and breakfast. But the advantage of many hostels is that you can cook your own dinners, as such saving a lot on your overall costs (if you are willing to go that far to save money.)
If you stay in dorms you will likely spend less in a hostel than in a hotel or B&B, but even then it is often a toss up.

Hostels are probably not going to fit what you need. It depends on the specific hostel but most are small, with a community bathroom and in some only have bunk beds. Hostels are a good option to keep costs low but you will most likely prefer a hotel. Even a 2 or 3 star hotel would work because you get the comfort and privacy of a hotel with prices that are fairly low.

If you are young at heart and willing to stay in accommodations that don't merit a star..go for it. I would highly suggest that you stick to hostels that offer private rooms as nature does take over in the dorm rooms. A private bathroom is nice but not necessary. Your best bet would be to stick to hotels where the bathroom is shared. As long as the room is private, you should feel secure. I am 58 and have stayed in all sorts of accommodations. I enjoy the "vibes" of the younger crowd. Prop me up by the juke box when I die.

there are many different hotels each with different service and different prices. Depends if you would like a 5 star hotel that is very very nice but very expensive and a 2-3 star hotel that will not be as expensive but do not expect the service of a 5 star one. u should definitely try going to a hotel, it is fun and relaxing
