Where is the nearest place to Los Angeles to get a somewhat dark night time sky for photography?
I'm gearing up for the July and August meteor showers and want a dark sky (or somewhat dark) to do some photography. The light pollution of Los Angeles is pretty bad, but I don't want to drive hours on end. Any ideas of what might be the nearest location to Los Angeles or Long Beach?

Go up along Angeles Crest Hwy. The Mount Wilson observatory is up there, and that is why. You could also go out to Catalina, especially Two Harbors, there are hardly any lights there. There is a Catalina Express terminal in Long Beach. The desert will work, but it is a longer drive.
In the city itself is pretty much a lost cause as cities have installed more and more lights over the years. You could go to the ocean side of Palos Verdes, but it is still not the same as being away from the city.

You need to hit the desert or the mountains. I prefer Joshua Tree since there are campgrounds and no mountain driving.

I don't know the area, but I know how to google:
https://sites.google.com/site/californiadarkskies/... lists many 'dark sky' locations. Figure out what's near you.
