Problem with anti-reflective glasses?

I have two pairs of glasses that I suspect have problems with their anti-reflective coating.

The first pair lasted about two years before the lenses started to become cloudy around the edges. Here's what they look like:

The second pair lasted only 7 months before they started to cloud up almost overnight. I brought them back to where I bought them (yesterday), and their only solution was to replace the lenses for $353.98 (plus tax). Arguing with them brought the price down to $180, and a call to their corporate offices is supposed to get me a further $50 reduction (I haven't seen that yet).

A search of the internet has led me to believe that the anti-reflective coating can be quickly removed without destroying the lenses. Has anybody here ever had this done? And if so, where, and what was the cost?

Thanks

I would stay far away from the place you bought the 2nd pair in the future. Any lab guarantees the anti reflection coatings for AT LEAST one year , and most for 2 years. The place you bought them from is charging you then getting them replaced free from the lab....$354.00 for those lenses is a real rip off to start with. You have the lined bifocal which is inexpensive.

Just to give you an idea, those same lenses with a premium anti reflection coating and 2 year warranty would be under $160.00 at my office.

Anti reflection coatings can not be quickly and easily removed. It is a last resort and is at the customers risk because very often it ruins the lenses completely. Even if they CAN get it all off, it leaves the lenses very vulnerable because there is no anti scratch coating left either and it can't be added again...so the lenses will be all scratched up within weeks anyway.

But, you are seeing what shopping in the chain stores does....you get ripped off and there is terrible service after...quite common in the chains.
