Question about dying your hair?

my hair is like naturally a mousey light brown colour, and the first time i dyed it was to darker brunette and that was semi permanent and then i tried to dye it red and it just did a red tint type thing, so eventually i dyed it back dark brown, then tried red again but professionally and they wouldnt bleach it so it didnt work because it wouldnt go over the dark brown, and now when i try to do it myself my roots go red and the rest goes brown and then it just still looks brown apart from when the sun shines on it but what if i used the colour b4 thing to strip it of dye then use the live colour xxl which looks like itll be strong because i want my hair to be properly red how can i make it do it properly ?
