tooth decayed to gums? root canal or extraction?

one of my teeth in the very back upper left has practically decayed to the gums. you can see inside the tooth and everything. anyway, a few months ago i was told it was a decayed cavity and they would just put a temporary filling in to see if it held well and if so, just fill it up. but if it got infected they would do a root canal. but i never went back because i got busy with many things, really not an excuse but i just didnt go. im also really afraid to go, im only 16 and might get a permanent tooth pulled!!! anyway, if the choice comes up, should i get a root canal or extraction? give me pros & cons of each if you can, and which is the worst pain on a scale from 1-10? this is happening tomorrow, im so nervous and embarrased that it even got this far :(

I think it's always best to get a root canal and a crown vs. having a tooth extracted.

The pain level for root canal and crown is probably a 2 - and that's only because of the novacaine injections.

The pain level for a tooth extraction is probably a 5 or more. You run the risk of developing a dry socket and then the pain level can reach an 8 or 9.

I urge you to get a root canal and crown.

    Good Luck!

If your dentist will be "knocking" you out, you ont feel a thing. I had a tooth pulled that was pretty bad, and they only gave me nitrous...what they did was got a hold of the toth and gently wiggled it then it proceeded to come out! Didn't take more than an hour!

Don't worry, I'm like you but sadly we don't have insurance and I'm worried I might get really sick and I'm only 13!! Good luck though

Just have it pulled, it sounds like there is no saving it.
